The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-08-30, Page 32PAGE 14A—GUDERItfH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 1979 Round 'n About ,—' With Martha The flowerbeds around town have been just beautiful, now at their peak, it is 'hard to describe them but the Parks Committee should have a special "thank you" for a big job well done. - Our Huge, black tree at the corner of Elgin Avenue and South Street has been getting a lot of attention this year. More and more people have mentioned to me that they have been taking notice. of its many shades off dark colors during the summer. Now it is getting lighter in color and soon it will be back to the color that appears early in the spring - well, close to the color. Sunday we discovered a fine park in Stratford - probably well known to a lot of you but we had not seen it before. It is Confederation Park - behind Kroehler Fur- niture factory and the art gallery - it was the Roth- man Gallery some years ago. A triangle of property and a chunk of waste land along side the railroad tracks was turned into a beautiful park. Huge stones from along. Lake Huron - they sure look like the ones you see from 35 miles and farther north of Goderich - anyway they were piled up nicely, a fountain bubbles out of the centre and the flowers and ivy were just beautiful. The pond at the base had a dead spot - that wasn't pretty as were some maple (I think) trees nearby. The trees were badly infested with a fungus or something that just gave one' »the shivers. I hope it never reaches our town - and I hope that Stratford Parks Board does something about it soon. You cannot compare our town with the city of Stratford. I think they too, must have a very good •parks board because it really is wonderful. wherever you drive around town, there are little bright spots and little parks and patches at street corners which bring good remarks from everyone. It will be wonderful when the rest of the brick sidewalks are finished around The .Square. Everyone, lately, agrees that our Square is greatly improved and with its flowers and trees it certainly helps to make Goderich one of the prettiest towns . in Canada. Now that the Bayfield Road project is finished you can't help but say "Isn't this great?" It is fantastic the way the projects all over town have been pushed through and there is no job that appears to be a patchy - will -have -to-do job such as has often had to be done. Oh my aching taxes! But we have deserved this „ - we've waited for years for these repairs and im- provements and the councils s h ave been n pushi g towards this upheaval for years and years. The present council gets the thank-yous but the past councils tried and :tried and helped to, bring this big job to a final beginning and finish. So...with our new roads and streets, our lovely flowers, trees and color everywhere I believe more people, instead of pushing on, will stop and see our nice town. I'd like to see a billboard at the outskirts of the town showing our Square's unique design and listing some of. the • special sites to view. I think the signs we have up now on entrances to the, town are good - but the big ones need to be out farther - about a mile so that "You are about to enter one of the prettiest towns in Canada" will make tourists take notice, give them time to think and, talk about this stop they hadn't planned on and. give them a pleasant memory of a very nice little town. Of course it is too late this season to act on this but the five month winter should be lots of time to get this done. Nick Hill Martha Rathburn will know what I have in mind - just ask him. I think he is a GREAT planner -- don't you? Don't forget the Rotary paper drive - for large pickups call 524-8314. Check the bulletin board and mark your calendar. Summer is nearly over and the Fall can be a busy one - will talk about that later. Love Martha Anglicans to picnic in Port Albert: Christ Anglican Church, Port Albert will ,hold its picnic . at the home' of Tom and Anne Livingstone, Port Albert on September 9, irri- mediately after the 2 p.m. service. A very in- teresting program has been arranged and Walter Tigert from Goderich, a member of the church for many years, will speak on the history of the church. Former members of Christ Church and friends are welcome. New hunting fees Fees for all Ontario Hunting Licences were increased recently.
