Goderich Memorial
Arena one day Massey
Hall the next?
To enjoy that success
budding singers and
dancers must first have
talent and , .second be
discovered. For 11
Goderich area hopefuls
both those obstacles may
have been hurdled
Saturday evening at the
Goderich Memorial
Arena.
Saturday night was the
first of what is hoped to
be an annual talent show.
The show is an audition, a
test of talent and an
ev.en_ing_of, ntrtainm,ent_
all wrapped into one. And
for some it could be the
start of a career in the
music industry.
Ron Allin and
Associates, financial and
management consultants
in Goderich, co-
sponsored the evening
with JMR Recorded
Productions Incor-
porated of Hamilton.
Both were happy with
turnout of performers but
were disappointed with a
very small audience.
Jason McKenzie heads
up JMR which bills itself
as an all Canadian
company involved in a
-"deep search" for
Canadian talent.
McKenzie is 'a musician,
producer, songwriter,
singer and recording".
artist who says he is
"dedicated to the music
business in every way".
His dedication resulted in
a mixture of government
grants and private 4n-
vestors that two years
ago resulted in JMR's
founding._ .. - ._.._ - ._ ......._.
The firm basically
provides the means for
anyone who thinks they
have talent to find out if
they have enough to
make their living from
music. JMR studios
provide 'recording
equipment, musical
instruments, backup
musicians and anything
else needed to make a
udlti
record. The firm wants
anyone who has any
desire to take advantage
of any talent they have,
or think they have, to
conte to the studio for a
recording session.
If an album or single is
cut at the studio and can
be marketed JMR will,
for a price, provide any
promotion, marketing
and distribution needed.
As one of JMR's ad-
vertisments says most of
the public is not aware of
the enormous costs of a
recording nor the
unlimited gains should a
musician hit the "right
..market .at e.. right time.
with the right song and
the right talent". -
Any talent that JMR
becomes involved with is
evaluated by a board of
directors comprised` of
musicians and
businessmen. If the board
feels the person has a
shot at a music career'
JMR will take them
under its wing. The firm
ns and ent
makes no prorrhi-s,ts
claiming it will "only'
offer the use of our
knowledge, guidance and
services to help you along
that long road to star-
dom".
When JMR sponsors a
talent show the entire
thing is taped for later
listening. Once back at
the studio the . tape is
played and the talent
•assessed. If a performer
is worth a second shot
they will be contacted
and a recording session
arranged,
McKenzie said the
talent/hat emerged .at.
the Goderich show would
be assessed before any
judgement was ,pas`sed.
He did say that he felt
there were a "few acts
worth_ in.y,e.sting_ money,
in" but would not go
much further than that.
"It boils down to
talent," he said. "If
you've got it you go
somewhere if you don't
you won't."

Susan MacDonald delighted the audience at the first of
what is hoped to be an annual talent show held Saturday
at the Goderich arena. Susan was one of about 11 area
performers to have their talents judged by a panel of
professionalsin the music profession. JMR Recorded
Productions Incorporated of Hamilton sponsored the
event which is part of what the firm calls a deep search
for Canadian talent. (photo by Jeff'Seddon)

Last production for Murphy
"The Sound Of Music",
now- in its second and
final week at the Huron
Country. Playhouse,
continues to play to
standing room only
audiences. The show,
which is the final work of
the .team, Rodgers and
Hammerstein, may
break all Playhouse
records for attendance.
The September 1
performance, a special
closing ,night gala, 'is a
Playhouse , Benefit and
not a regular subscription
event. "The, Sound Of
Music" marks the 28th
and final production to be
directed at the Playhouse
by founder James
Murphy, who retires at
the close of the current
year. "The Sound of
Music;', with its cast of
25, its use of seven local
children, its orchestra
and multiple settings,
seems a popular ending
to the Playhouse's eighth
season.

the season over 1,600

performance will be
given on Saturday,
September 1 at 11 a.m. on
the Playhouse stage.
"Sleeping Beauty" is

Theatre" and is• made
possible from a grant
from Young Canada
Works.
