The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-07-05, Page 37Leaving the family
for the .real world --
BY PATRICK
MADDEN.
This year, as I hope
most of you know, we are
finally- graduating --
graduating from what • I
call a "family" into the
real world.
We are leaving St.
Mary's with many happy
memories—Memories
which will leave a mark
on how we shall think and
choose, about .our. ideals.._
Miss Stemp has been a
great aid in preparing us
for that big step towards
.high school. With a class
as "radical",as ours, she
has managed to turn all
of us onto the right path
towards becoming
responsible persons. I
can hardly remember
once when she's yelled at
us. I think it's her eyes.
They hypnotize you into
sitting down or' being
quiet.
' We must not forget our
previous teachers like
Mrs. Doherty 'for
teaching Grades 3.and 5.
She provided an at-
mosphere for good, hard
learning.. -
What about Grade 4? I
._can swear we -had at least.
eight different teachers
that year:••-•..
Gr•a•de, 6 with" Mr.
• Skillen--r-tlnnk he had
tWo .._ fa3oriite .-..phrases—..
"You've got a detention"
and "You've got a °phone
call".
Grade. 7with Mr.
'Govenlock was fun. His
favorite pass time was 7 -
up. That year we'triedithe
patience of two teachers
•and we succeeded.
But we also must
remember the secretary,
Mfrs. Stringer, a very
' faithful lady as well as
Mr. Burke for keeping.
our school in tip top
condition: ' '
But school wasnat all
fun and games. There
was a spiritual side to it,
one of the reasons why w•e.
are here. We Were taught
religion every day and
once a week Father
Moynahan would visit us.
He would come in every...
. month . to provide the
opportunity to receive the
Sacrament of Recon-
ciliation. But as Father
got older, he didn't travel
as much..
Finally, the day came
'tea... when he retired and a
new.,p.riest by the name of
Father Loebach became
:.w rnrr priest._ e. --brought
change to the school and
church. Confession
became a more personal
thing between you .and
God. Father-Loebach is a
wonderful "man and we
are lucky to have him as
our priest..
Our class has' been
through a lot together w
these pastyears--fun
times and Rot so• fun
times --times of sorrow
and happiness. '
Besides preparing for
high school, we have had
the honor of being con-
firmed by Bishop
McCarthy, as well as the
responsibility of being
leaders and models for
others.
....As w.e., mo•ve_on in..life,
we must take time to find
ourselves and what we
want to be. Maybe one of
us will grow up to be a
doctor, a.nurse, a lawyer,
whatever, as long as we
are happy with what we
are and do.
We are saying goodbye
to St. Mary's and hello to
G.D.0:I. I don't think
anybody forgets grade
school. It's too important
to forget. It's a part of us
and our growing up. I
know I will never forget
St. Mary's.
