Says not smoking will solve problems
The Huron County Unit
of the Canadian Cancer
Society met in Goderich
on May 14th with the
Goderich Branch as
hosts. There were 52
members and friends in
attendance.
Lung cancer would
disappear if people did
not smoke. For these
cancers that we cannot
prevent, early diagnosis
is the key to successful
recovery.
Dr. Thom .son feels
Mel Farnsworth
welcomed everyone and
as president of the.
Goderich Branch, he was
delighted to see some of
their canvassers and
captains in attendance.
Some of the highlights of
the evening were: Car-
frey Cann of the Exeter
Branch presented the
unit president, Helen
Davies, with a cheque in
the amount of $3,400
which represented the net
.profits from the Fashion
Forecast '79 Show. Ross
McDaniel, unit campaign
chairman, reported a
total of over $50,000
reached to date in the
County campaign.
Guest speaker for the
evening was Dr. Bruce
Thom son, Medical
Advisor to the Goderich
Branch. Dr. Thompson
spoke about cancer,
starting with causes of
the disease i.e. heredity,
radiation, industrial
diseases and some from
psychological causes. He
stressed the importance
of early detection and
early diagnosis through
mass screening such as
the • Pap test. He noted
that 85 percent of ALL

_.There are a great many
changes around town -
many surprises. The
other day on West St., I
noticed a parking space
at Andrews' Dairy, so I
whipped in thinking how
lucky I was to find a spot
so. easily but the place
was CLOSED - it didn't
say how long or why and I
was really disappointed.
Andrews' had such a
reputation for being a
"friendly place" for
about 40 years or more. I
can't think of any other
place - since Blackstone's-
that would put up with the
gangs of high-schoolers
that gathered after
school.
They were kept under
control but the
management never in-
terfered with their fun.
Hundreds of people now

raised families of their

times at Andrews'. Too
bad to see it fade away.

have written to her about
adopting a brother or
sister. They have asked
her not to tell their
parents because they
want to get them a baby
o- as a surprise.
One little boy wrote to
her and said he would like
to adopt Ruth (a child
who appeared in Today's
Child) as his sister
because .he had a tree
house and there was also
lots of space at his mom
and dad's house and
"besides we have an
extra hole in our electric
toothbrush".
Perhaps for every child
who needs them, there
are not only loving
parents out tisere
somewhere but loving
brothers and sisters too.
Alexander and Chapman
had moved and I walked
into their old place of
business to find a group of
Liberals chatting
merrily.
Today - Thursday - the
business called
"FABRICS and MAUR"
open in this location. The
MAUR" is part of the
name of the owner Maur-
een Elliott, but I think
they hoped' people would
realize they had fabrics
and MORE,
I have heard people
stumble over this title
pronouncing the little
word like HOW -R instead
of MOWER - like grass!
Anyway the tricky title
or logo usually. sticks in
your mind - once you get
it straight.
So they have a bright
roomy store now with a
large room at the back
for the sewing lessons,
which will start in the
fall.
This .I'm sure, is a nice
addition to The Square
and we can only wish
them good luck. Happy
Days.
Here we are into June!
All kinds of nice things
can happen in June
especially with the
weather - I hope.
One big item. presents
itself to us - and I know
many of us will enjoy it -
the 125th birthday for the
Town of Auburn. Their
celebrations' start Friday
June 29 and take in the
weekend.
They have a big dance
to kick off the celebration
after the beards have
been judged and the
Heritage Queen chosen.
Saturday starts with
pancakes and goodies
and a big parade starting
at one p.m.
They have six or more
bands lined up, three
groups of Shriners will
help entertain and excite
you. There_is a big band
tattoo in the afternoon,
