have been lots of families
of two and three adopted
together through Today's
Child. With the cost of
living being so high now,
she was afraid this might
become impossible but so
far the response has not
dropped off.
It has never been
necessary to split up a
family featured in
Today's Child with the
exception of one family of
five. In that case two
children were adopted by
one family and the other
three by another family
living next door.
Six families of six have
been adopted through
Today's Child. There
were 55 inquiries 'about
one family of six which
appeared in the column
and ' three of these
inquiries came from
parents who already had
six children of their own.
Four families of seven
have been adopted
through Today's Child.
Two hundred and eight
couples inquired after
one family of seven girls.
They were adopted by a
childless couple who have
coped very well, says
Miss Allen,i
Miss Allen likes to tell
the story of one couple
who had four children of
their own, then adopted
an infant, then adopted a
brother and sister and
then adopted a family of
five Indian children.
• They are now in the
process of adopting the
baby brother of the five
Indian • children which
will give them a family of
13 children altogether. It
is stories like this one
which helps to make Miss
Allen's conviction of
parents being out there
for every child, even
stronger.
SLOW LEARNERS
The hardest type of
child to find a family for
seems to be the slow
learner. For some reason
families want their
children all to earn Ph.Ds
these days, laughs Miss
Allen. However, children
who are slow learners are
just as loving as other
children.
The children appearing
' in Today's Child and on
Family Finder, only
appear if they want to.
Most of them want the
exposure because they
are anxious to have
families, explains Miss
Allen.
The number of children
available– for adoption
seems to be on the
decrease, says Miss Allen
and as the number of
available children
decreases, the number of
interested parents seems
to increase.
More people these days
seem content to have
children who are not
carbon copies of them-
selves, says Miss Allen.
They are willing to accept
children who are very
different from them-
selves.
Adoptive parents no
longer seem to feel the
need to pretend that their
children came otit of a
vacuum with no past or
'memories. That is why
many more are willing to
adopt brothers and
sisters together, she says.
Miss Allen has am-
bivalent feelings about
adopted children sear-
ching for their biological
parents. Some adoptive
parents feel threatened
by this and Miss Allen
says the adoptive parents
are the child's real
parents because they are
the ones who raise him.
But those children
searching for their roots
often explain that they
are not looking for a new
mom and dad; they just
want to know what made
them the way they are.
It's an obssession with
some but there are many
others who are not in-
terested in finding out
about their biological
parents. In Scotland, for
instance, where, children
can find out their real
birth names very easily,
only about one per,, ;cent
bother to do just that,
says Miss. Allen.
SINGLE PARENTS
Single people are
allowed to adopt children
under exceptional cir-
cumstances and there are

a few who do so every
year. There is an in-
creasing interest from
unmarried men to adopt
children and Miss Allen
says she knows of two
different single men who
have adopted two boys
each.
Miss Allen says it is
important to tell children
they are adopted even
before they fully un-
derstand the meaning of
the word,. She knows of
one mother who used to
use the words, "my little
adopted boy", in a lullaby
to help her adopted..child
associate that word with
pleasant things.
Most children who end
up in adoption agencies
are there because' of
family break downs.
There are many reasons
why families can fall
apart and death is not the
major one, says Miss
Allen. There is crime,
divorce, alcoholism,
illness, poverty, etc. At
one time the extended
family (relatives) . could
absorb the children but
today's nuclear family
cannot.
When a child reaches
the age of 18, he or she
can leave the care of the
adoption agency. Miss
Allen says children as old
as 17 have been adopted
through Today's Child.
Miss Allen gets at- '
tatched to many of the
children she meets
through her job. She sa's
her job also brings her a
lot of great mail. Twice in
15 years two little girls
