Although not in-
corporated officially as a
non-profit organization
until June 1977, the
Exeter Saddle Clubwas
founded in 1957. For the
past 22 years, its primary
obj-ecti-ve has been to
encourage fellowship,
sportsmanship and
horsemanship amongst
its members - par-
ticularly amongst the
youth, most of whom ate
area 4-H Horse Club
members - by promoting
knowledge in the care,
handling and enjoyment
of horses as well as in the
science of equitation and
showmanship.
Over the years the Mid -
Western Quarter Horse
Show has proven to be the
largest annual breed
show in Western Ontario.
It has consistently
received a Class A rating
from the American
Quarter Horse
Association.
Last year's show, for
example, attracted a
total of 381 entries - 242
adult and 139 youth - from
all over Ontario as well as
New York, Michigan and
Ohio.
This year's show will
feature many in-
ternational exhibitors
from the American
Quarter Horse Congress
in Columbus, Ohio and
Quarterama, Toronto
who will be competing in
both Western and English
events.
Refreshments,
sanitation and parking
facilities are all available
on the grounds and the
admission is only $I per

Plan public meeting on new hall
The Goderich Township
recreation council held a
special meeting Thur-
sday May 24 at the
township •office,
Holmesville to meet with
field workers, Mrs.
Louise Marrat and Miss
Valarie Gilmor of Rural
Development Outreach
and to learn how
university resources can
benefitrural people.
Examples of help
available were given;
such as townships maps
of municipal drains
catalogued,. help—in----w_
setting up a township
plan, museum work -help
incataloguing items,
man -power to get work
projects going in certain
areas. Louise and Valerie
said that they would be
theliaison agents between
the 'township recreation
and university resource
people to help. in any
planning.
Recreation council
problems tumbled out
from all members, while
the very amicable
visitors took careful
stock. After a lengthy rap
session hinging mainly on
the slow interest , in the
proposed new township
hall, it was decided to
conduct a carefully
prepared public meeting
on the township hall on
Wednesday June 6 in
advance a good format of
questionaires for
discussionwill be set up.
Then Tuesday May 29 is
ear marked for rec
council training in con-
ducting theseveral
discussion groups at the
public meeting.
So that the proposed
new township hall project
is a success public par-
ticipation is, a must. In
order to get this project
off the ground, it ''must
begin with the people.
Personal contact will be
made to see that an
overflow crowd attends
the public meeting on
Wednesday June 6 at 8
p.m. at Holmesville
public school.
July *at a cost. of $18 per
child, $50 for a family of 3
or more. Registration
forms were handed out
for delivery to the in-
terested township
swimmers, More are

secretary.
,It was decided to make
a recommendation to
township council that

The Quarter Horse is
the most versatile, best
all-round horse the world
has ever known. He is
gentle, and his easy-going
disposition makes him an
ideal mount for women
and children. He is
thrifty, easy to keep and
train for—multiple uses.
He has no equal for
rodeoing — cutting,
roping, barrel -racing,
bull -dogging.
The Quarter Horse is
intelligent, determined,
sure-footed; ideally
suited to ,trail -riding. His
stance permits him to
move quickly in any
direction — to start, stop
and turn with the ease
and balance of a cat. He
is without peer as a race
horse up to 440 yards. He
can do more jobs better
than any other horse in
the world.
The breed originated
during the Colonial era in
the Carolinas and
Virginia, where, more
than 300 years ago, match
racing was the leading
outdoor sport, with races
run on village streets and
along country lanes near
the plantations. Seldom
were these horses raced
beyond 440 yards, hence
the colloquial name
"quarter -miler", which
became "Quarter Hor-
se"!
The foundation of these
quarter running horses
came from the Arab,
Barb and Turk breeds
brought to North
America by Spanish
explorers and ,traders.
Stallions selected from
these .first arrivals were
crossed with a herd of
mares which arrived
from England in 1620.
The cross produced
compact, heavily -
muscled horses which
could run a short distance
faster than any other
breed.
The Quarter Horse
survived time and change
because he excelled in
qualities which were of
major importance to the
greatest number of
persons in diverse oc-
cupations and
geographical areas. He
was early„—afogted by
ranchers and cowboys as
the greatest round -up and

trail -driving horse they
had ever seen, for he
possessed inherent "cow
sense".
The Quarter Horse
became established in the
Southwest in the early
part off the Nineteenth
Century. As he trailed
cattle north and—west, he
left his progeny along the
way, thus his greatest
influence remained in the
Southwest until after his
registry was established
