Harry J. Boyle
back at Guelph
Harry Boyle, a native
of St. Augustine and a
writer, broadcaster and
former chairman of the
Canadian Radio -
Television and
Telecommunication
Commission (CRTC),
will return as writer -in -
residence for the
University of Guelph's
Summer Campus
program.
The author's casual
and candid discussions on
writing were extremely
well received last year.
Many of the members of
his creative writing class
have continued to meet as
a writers' group
throughout the past year,
and will be returning to
listen to the master
storyteller this July.
Although Mr. Boyle has
fulfilled numerous roles
as a writer and as a CBC
executive over the past 30
years, last summer was
his first experience as a
teacher.
"It usually takes a long
time for a relationship
such as we had to develop
among writers," he says.
"Part of the success must
be in the surroundings of
the campus."
A particularly restful
and beautiful place in the
summer, the University
of Guelph campus
probably helped, but the
figure of Harry Boyle was
certainly the main
ingredient.
Mr. Boyle's informal
yet informative approach
as a teacher is charac-
teristic of Summer
Campus. Established in
1976, the summer
program offers an
unusual vacation which
combines relaxation and
learning. Since courses
and recreational ac-
tivities appealing to all
ages and interests are
available, entire families
as well as individuals
attend.
The special .youth
programs are geared to
different ale groups from
pre-schoolers to teens.
Youngsters can try their
talents at journalism,
mime, painting, crafts or
music. Or they may
develop a life-long in-
terest in computers and
astronomy. A daily swim
and sports are an integral
part of each day's ac-
tivities.
For adults, Summer
Campus '79 offers 20
courses in addition to Mr.
Boyle's. These include
horticulture,

Long
delay
ahead
The two -month-long
firearms amnesty
program at the end of
1978 has caused a six-
month minimum delay in
processing applications
for restricted weapon
permits.
These applications deal
with three categories of
guns. They are: Rifles or
shotguns with a muzzle
velocity of over 500 feet
per second, a barrel
length of less than 181/2
inches and which use
centre -fire ammunition
in a semi-automatic
mode. Also. included are
guns such as pistols
designed to be fired with
one hand; guns that can
be folded or telescoped
shorter than 26 inches;
fully automatic weapons
registered prior to
January 1, 1978, and
forming part of a- bona
fide gun collection.
Chief Provincial
Firearms Officer, Jim
Villemaire, of the O.P.P.
Registration Branch
says, "We processed
22,000 during the am-
nesty, ten times the usual
number. All of the ap-
plications have to be
vetted through Ottawa".
Superintendent
Villemaire continued,
"With forms going in
from right across the
country, it will take them
a while to get to them
all".
