LUTHERAN CHURCH
On May 24 this year
many Christians
celebrate the festival of
the Ascension of the Lord
Jesus Christ, "higher
than all the heavens, in
order . to fill the .whole
universe” (Ephesians 4;
10 NIV). For some people
es1onDay to all!
Ascension Day is a sort of
poor <Cousin among the
celebrations of the
church. There are no
gifts, ornaments, or
decorations. No special
clothes, or sales in the
stores. No trees or eggs
or parades.
Yet for those who grasp
the significance of the
Bible's teaching of the.
Ascension there is reason
for joyful celebration.
The Bible says that the
Father "raised Him
(Christ) from the dead
and seated Him at His
right hand in the
heavenly realms, far
above all rule and
authority, power and
dominion, and every title
that can be given,
Ephesians 1: 20-21 NIV.
What a comfort this is
in an election week, and
for a world in turmoil!
Our world continues to
be filled with temptations
and heartaches, broken
dreams and physical
aches, losses, loneliness, powerful comfort for all
disappointments and our lives, for they show us
separations. where to direct our needs,
But Easter has told us and why. Jesus is now
of the Son of God rising declared to be the

fering and dying for our all power is given to Him

assures us that He -is That's why we go to
indeed the Son of God by Him in prayer. He is the
declaring His return to almighty God, inviting us
the throne of the Father, to cast all our cares on
there to rule over all Him. Who else could ever
things in heaven and on hear, let alone answer, all
earth. our prayers?
These truths are a Further, the Bible
assures us in Hebrews 4
that the throne to which
we direct our prayers is a
throne of grace. This is so
because Jesus is our High
Priest, who offered
Himself as the perfect
sacrifice for our sins, and
is now at the right of God,
praying for us. We can
know that He is on our
side and wants us to have
every good thing, in spite
of the fact that we
deserve only.. con-
demnation.
So that's what
Ascension Day can mean
for us. No matter which
political leadergoverns
the nation, no matter
what events affect our
lives, we have an
Advocate with the Father
who cares for us, knbws
our needs, and has all
power in heaven and
earth to guard and guide
the lives of those who
trust in Him.
