in the county. In the
secondary schools there
are occupational
programs and a tutorial
assistance program is in
the offing.
Incorporated into three
public schools in the
county are special
schools for the trainable
mentally retarded.
All of the public schools
have remedial education
as well as core subject
assistance in English and
math. There is home and
hospital instruction.
Provision is made for
those who are physically
handicapped as well. If
students are enrolled in
special schools outside
the county (e.g. London's
Crippled Children's
Centre, deaf school or
blind school), they are
assisted by the board
with transportation costs.
There are also
enrichement programs
for gifted students and
classes for those students
with behavioural
problems... -
There is even provision
to teach English as a
second langurage to those
students who need it.
A group of 12 teachers
ased at the ad-
inistration office in
Clinton visit all the
schools in the county on a
• weekly basis to deal with
students . •.who have
speech, hearing and
learning disabilities.
Mr. Kenwell concluded
by telling the students
that ,teaching can be
frustrating but is also
very rewarding for those
considering careers in it.
WORKSHOP TOURS
Friday . was set aside
for a tour of the
Bluewater Centre's farm,
carwash,'greenhouse and
workshops. A film en-
titled, Try Another Way,
was shown and a panel
discussion held.
' The panel pointed out
that the developmentally
handicapped are now
doing more skilled things
than Was ever thought
possible but that a big
selling job still has to be
done on the public. The
public is ignorant, for the
most part, of the fact that
the developmentally
handicapped can become
skilled workers and
contribute to society.
They still confuse mental
illness with mental
handicap.
The panel agreed that
the skill level of the
developmentally han-
dicapped is not a
problem. The problems
are social and emotional,
the attitudes of others in
the workplace towards
them. Perhaps the ob-
jective should not just be
to teach the handicapped
skills to get a job but
social skills to hold a job
too.
For a lorig time the
handicapped have been
shut away although they
have a lot of potential,
agreed the panel.
In summing up, W.
.Gregg, 'Bluewater Centre
director, said that the
Centre was not an in-
stitution but a small
community. He said the
residents there were not•
being rehabilitated but
habilitated because staff
were often starting to
teach them from scratch.
At 'first, he said, centres'
like Bluewater were built
td protect the'community
from the develop-
mentally handicapped
but now these centres
protect the handicapped
from the community until
that community is ready
to accept them.
