Takes
special
people
Thursday was careers
day at the Bluewater
Centre when 150 students
from Huron County's five
high schoots attended
workshop sessions of-
fered by four
professionals.
Miss J. Moran, con-
sultant with Health
Records and Career
Services, Ontario
Hospital Association said
it takes a special person
to work with the
developmentally han-
dicapped. She told the
students that there are a
'variety of health careers
open to both males and
females if they are
willing to accept shift
work and go where the
jobs are.
Frank Sussex, director
of the mental retardation
counselling program at
Fanshawe College, said
one has to be a person
who really cares about
other people in order to
work with the develop-
mentally handicapped:
Caring, he continued,
gives one motivation to
get through the bad times
and to do a lot of un- .
pleasant chores like
feeding, cleaning up
after, etc.
He suggested that
students do volunteer
work with the develop-
mentally handicapped
before . deciding on a
career with them. He
described a mental
retardation counsellor as
a jack-of-all-trades. •He
said there are plenty of
jobs in the field, and that
60 per cent of those who
graduate from the
Fanshawe program work
in government facilities
like the Bluewater
Centre.
Dr. P.:'Giovannetti,
chairman of the Home
Economics Department
at UWO, spoke on careers
in nutrition. She said good
nutrition is important
from the craddle to the
grave. Improper
nutrition can lead to still,
premature 'and un-
derweight births and
deficiency in brain
development. A good
background in science is
important if entering this
field, she told the
students.
Don Kenwell,
superintendent of
education with the Huron
County Board of
Education, told the
students that that board
was the second largest
employer in the county
with 24. public schools,
five secondary schools
and three special
schools; 11,700 students
total; 350. public school
staff, 274 secondary
school staff, and nine
special school staff.
Including the support
staff, there are 950 em-
ployees. Seven thousand
students are trasnported
10,000 miles a day by bus
at a cost of $23 million a
year.
He ,pointed out that
there are many different
kinds of special education.

Lawton.
Brian Low, consulting
director of the Owen
Sound and District
Association for the
Mentally Retarded,
spoke next. He said it
wasn't until the 1950s that
parents pf handicapped
children began lobbying
for services and that it
took some time for the
government and the
public to come around.
He said there is a moral
and ethical responsibility
to educate and train each
developmentally han-
dicapped person to reach
his full potential. Only
recently have the
developmentally han-
dicapped begun to
receive support and there
is still a long way to go, he
said.
Marg Lawson, a public
health nurse with CPRI in
London, spoke next on
that centre's direct
service to 14 counties
including Huron in the
diagnostid treatment of
developnleiltally han-
dicapped Children and
parent training.
