' Mr. Houston came to know the legendary carvers who live beneath the mountains in their clans of raven, eagle, wolf, and bear in. the Northwest Coast area of British Columbia. In Ghost Paddle; A Nor- thwest Coast Indian Tale, Hooits and his chieftan father, Sea Wolf, try to bring peace to tribes who have been constantly at war. Armed with only his "ghost" paddle, Hooits learns that bringing peace is just about as difficult as being at war. James Houston's most recent book Frozen Fire, is based in part on a true and perilous journey taken by an Eskimo boy in the 1960's. Matthew and his Eskimo friend, Kayak, go off by snowmobile on a secret - search for two missing men. The two boys struggle for their lives in the Arctic storms and Matthew learns to value the araditional Eskimo way of life which is fast changing in the con- tempdrary world. Insall his books, James Houston captures the simple dignity' of the . Eskimo and Indian way of life. His texts are succinct and his drawings are powerful to portray the strength and cruel, yet fascinating beauty of the people. (Ages 8 and up.) Dear Captain Comet, My name Is Kelly Kent.
