The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-05-17, Page 22PAGE 2A -GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, MAY 17, 1979 Historic jail opens this weekend BY CATH WOODEN Walking down that long, narrow tunnel was like walking through a time machine. ,I The air became cooler. Every soundechoed uff tie -high stone walls. My imagination started playing games... I was suddenly aware , that my steps were getting smaller and smaller. I looked down at the shackles around my ankles and felt panicky. My wrists too, were cuffed in iron. Clang! The heavy door shut behind me, im- prisoning me in the core of the jail., Prodded from behind, I climbed the spiral staircase to the second floor. Clang! Another door. And then another. I was in a cell. A tiny, dark cave in the inner recesses of the jail was to become my home - my nemesis for committing some heinous crime... The Huron Historic Jail can do that to you. It perspires history. You don't need to be told that it's the oldest public building in Western Ontario (it was built in 1839-42). You can feel it. The building located on Highway 21 north of .Goderich, is not only the oldest around, it is also the most unique. "It's the only jail of its kind in existence," says Harry Bosnell, curator of the jail. The entire structure is octagonal. By walking around the centre part of a level, the jailor could see everything in each wing. There aren't any .square rooms in the whole strucutre. It makes you feel uneasy. Harry Bosnell has curated the Huron Historic Jail since it opened as a museum on July 1, 1974. He is assisted by his wife, eileen. In 1975, Jack and Georgina Bosman joined the staff. "It's kind of a family effort," says Mr. Bosnell. '"We all work on a half - paid basis." This summer, five students will complete the staff. Shelly Rivett and Debbie Searls will be hostesses, and welcome the visitors. Three more students will be working all summer -on the restoration of stone walls, windows, and furniture. Presently, the jail is open for tours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Starting the long weekend in May until Labour Day, it will be open seven days a week from 10 a,m. to 5:30 p.m. The Huron Historic Jail attracted 17,780 visitors last year. The figure has been increasing every year, but the curator says money is still a problem and the jail needs more business. "We've been thinking about giving little prizes for the 50th, 100th, 500th and so on visitor to come in here." The historical site does not have a big souvenir display the way some tourist attractions • do. There are t -shirts, penants, ceramics and copies of historical documents such as Tiger Dunlop's will on sale in the reception area. This year, a new at- traction •is being added. The "Jailor's apart- ment" is being furnished and restored with old furniture discovered in the basement. All restoration is completed as accurately as possible, although it takes much time and money. Last year, through the Experience '79 Program, student Rob Cornish of Bayfield was, hired to do intensive SAVE ENERGY and Insulate U.F. Foam & Fiber Insulation Serving Huron County 15 years COMPARE...CONTACT STEWART'S ALUMINIUM & INSULATION 207 Hurori Rd. Goderich 524-8821 research into the jail. Rob discovered many new facts, making authentic restoration more possible. There are other new artifacts in the jail that weren't there last- •ear. Some are on loan to the jail and others have been donated. Another attraction that many people are unaware of is • the Governor's House. Added to th jail in 1900, its rooms are completely restored, except for the kitchen, and offer stark contrast to the eerie atmosphere of the jail. After a successful first season, the flea market will be held every Sun- day, starting June 17 on the carefully manicured grounds of the Huron Historical Jail. There is no admission charged, although donations will be gratefully accepted, says Mr. Bosnell. Vendors are charged $3 for the first ten feet, and 50 cents a foot after that. I shuddered as I walked back through the passageway towards daylight. I could have sworn I saw men exer- cising in one of the five - walled yards. I could have sworn the last hanging "'was yesterday, and not in 1911. I never wanted to see bars and. locks, or even play Monopoly again.
