More than 300 GDCI students ran, jogged and walked a'10 km
course Monday to raise money for the development of an athletic
field adjacent to the school. Lynn Meyers estimated the group
raised between $5,000 and $6,000 for the project through the walk-
a-thon. Plans for the parcelofland , now leased to the town by the
Huron County Board of Education, include a synthetic track,
softball daimond, basketball court and football field. Monies
raised by the students and coupled with grants will go towards
draining the land this summer. (photo by Dave Sykes)
Students jog to make field a reality
More than 300 GDCI
students put their North
Stars to the pavement
Monday to raise money
for an athletic field ad-
jacent to the high school.
The students council of
GDCI has been staging
walk-a-thons to raise
money to develop a piece
of land across from the
school football field into a
track facility. The parcel
of land was owned by the
Huron County Board of
Ed,ication but is now
leased to the town of
Goderich.
The students of GDCI
have been raising money
for the project for the last
three years. -The plans
call for a synthetic
running track, softball
diamond, asphalt
basketball court, a
football field and a soccer
piteh.
But before anything
can be done the land must
be drained and teacher
Lynn Meyers explained
that the costs are
prohibitive and could.
amount to $$22,000 just
for drainage.
The surfacing of the
synthetic track was
estimated at $18,000 to
$20,000 six years ago but
that price has now
escalated to over $80,000..
