Happiness mit now and forever
BY THE REVEREND
E. J. DENTINGER, C.R.
PASTOR OF
ASHFIELD PARISH
Was Christ a
revolutionary?
It depends on how you
define the word
revolutionary.
If by a revolutionary
you mean one who takes
authority into his own
hand to bring about a
radical change by
violence and bloodshed,
then Christ was not a
revolutionary.
But if you mean by
revolutionary one armed
with divine authority to
bring man to his senses
and to give him a whole
set of new values, that
would give meaning to
life, then Christ was a
revolutionary of the best
kind.
However he ac-
complished his mission
without violence,
bloodshed and war.
He himself declared a
kind of open warfare on
man's present way of life
when he said, `I am come
to send fire upon the
earth and what will I but
that it be kindled. I have a
baptism wherewith I am
to be baptized and how I
am in labour until it be
accomplished. Think you
that I have come to give
peace to the earth, I tell
you `no' but the sword.'
These are fighting
words of a strong m n
who was to challenge the
wisdom of the world,
which would give all
mankind a new meaning
to. life.
What these new values
were he would tell them
from time to time during
his lifetime. He was to
say, for example, as
regards man's relations
with his fellow man, 'You
have heard it said that
you should love your
neighbour and hate your
enemy. But I say to you
love your enemy and do
good to those who per-
secute you.'
Reason cannot un-
derstand the wisdom-- of
God - you must live by the
principles of Christianity
accepting them on the
word of God. That is the
great blessing of
Christianity - you don't
have to learn the hard
way by trial and error in
working out a plan 'of life
because Christ has
already given you a fool-
proof plan in finding
happiness.
What did Christ mean
when He said, 'Love your
enemies - do good to those
who hate you.' How can I
love the man who is
trying to destroy me in
business, who is trying to
destroy my good name?
Christ is telling us to
help them in their hour of
need as we would a friend
— to seek their spiritual
welfare - to pray for them
that God may help them
to see the right way and
live it.
He is not asking us to
love what our enemies do.
We are to despise the evil
men do just as He,', did.
Christ is not asking you to
love what your enemy
does but to love him for
what he is - a creature of
God composed of body
and soul and made to the
image and likeness of
God.
Was Christ a
revolutionary? He was
indeed: But ,unlike other
rebels he was not trying
to cure the ills of society
by giving people all they
wanted - such as freedom
from pain and power over
their enemies. In fact, ilt
was his mission to con-
vince the people that
what they wanted most
was not good for them.
In place of prosperity
he preached a doctrine of
detachment from earthly
goods; in place of
military power, he
preached a doctrine of
love your enemies.
There is only one way
