Chess champ
Concentration is one of the keys to becoming a suc-
cessfull chess player and Tim Reid, a Grade 8 student
at St, Mary's School in Goderich, kept his mind oh his
game enough to grab a Huron -Perth separate school
chess championship last week. Reid won eight of nine
games in the tournament edging two students from St.

Provincial president speaks to W..I. directors
"Our conduct is in-
fluenced not only by our
experience but by our
expectations," said Mits.
C. Diamond, the
Provincial President of
the Federated Women's
Institute of Ontario. She
was welcoming the
directors from all over
the province to the semi-
annual meeting at the
Lord Simcoe Hotel in
Toronto.
The next four days
would be spent in
decisions and
deliberations that would
affect the 30,000 members
in Ontario at4d indeed in
society.
With the "International
Year of the Child," and
health being the prime
concern, the members
were urged to go to their
respective areas
promoting a study and
then definite action in this
regard.
Miss Molly McGhee,
the director of Home
Economics Branch,
Ministry of Agriculture
and Food, was pleased
Qwith increased inquiries
regarding food preser-
vation, nutrition, and the
quality of foods. This
shows the need for the
service of this Branch.
In 1981 it will be the,
"International Year of
the Disabled Persons",
which affects 10 percent
of the population of
Ontario 94 she asked the
Women's Institute• to
become involved in this
project.
The Department of
Home Economics cont,,
tinues to provide ex-
cellent training for the 4-
H leaders and senior
courses which is a service
that, makes available
unlimited learning for
thousands each year in
the province.
The Women's Institute,
with its interest in
education, presented 13
' awards to students at the
College of Family and
Consumer Studies in
Guelph as well as the
county awards
throughout the province.
The Junior Women's
Institute is growing
across the province, said
Linda Tottenham and
Ruth McCurdy, the
'Junior Board Directors.
As the Federated
Women's Institute of
Ontario celebrates its
60th anniversary this
year with a reunion for
past and present .board
directors, executives and
special guests the
Federated Women's
Institute •of Canada will
also celebrate its
Diamond Jubilee at the
national convention • in
Saskatoon in June. Many
are planning to attend
from Ontario.
Members are urged to
attend the offical opening
of the addition to the
Adelaide Hoodless
Homestead on June 1
from 2 to 4 p.m.
Don't forget the special
events at the Erlard Lee
(museum) Home at
Stoney Creek.
Mrs. Margaret Zoeller,
the chairman of the
committee, spoke of the
demonstrations and
displays that will be
ready for W.I. week June
5 to 8 and for Canada
Week.
These two homes are
important for the foun-
ding 'of the Women's
Institute not only for
Ontario but around the
world.

Bridge club scores
Jean Cook and Verna
Worthy combined for a
point total of 101 to take
first, place in the east -
west section of play at the
Mayl meeting of the
Goderich Brige Club.
There were seven tables
in play.
Evelyn Galbraith and
Dawna Sproule finished
in second spot with 941/2
points while Susan White
and Bill Cochrane settled
for third place with 891/2

Dinesh Weerassoriya took an eight wily two loss record
into the finals of the Huron -Perth separate school
senior checker tournament last week and ended up
tied for second place when the action,was over. Dinesh
one won and lost won in the final round and had to

youngsters interested in
playing T -ball and sof-
tball will be on Saturday
at the recreation office on
Waterloo Street.
The _.. recreation
department is attempting
to establish softball
leagues for boys and girls
up to 15 years of age.
If enough interest is
shown, T -ball divisions
will include boys and
girls from 'five to eight
years old. Girls softball
divisions' will include
girls from nine to 14 years
of age while boys teams
will go to 15 years of age.

registration day for boys and girls T -Ball and boys and
girls softball on Saturday, May 5, 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. at
the Recreation Office. The respective groupings are as
follows:
T -BALL
Five and six years old, boys and girls; Seven and eight
year old boys and girls. These groupings are flexible
and provide us with the opportunity to make special
considerations based on the child's ability.

Girls - 9, 10, 11 year olds and 12, 13, 14 year olds
