The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-05-03, Page 3. C.I. students to present Go BY JOANNE BUCHANAN G.D.C.I. drama club members are in their final week of rehearsals for . , the musical production, Godspell. •t.iodspell, a play based on the gospel according to St. Matthew, will be presented at G.D.C.I. on May 10, 11 and 12. If it proves to be as successful as last year's musical production of My Fair Lady, then audiences have a real treat in store for them. Godspell features a' core cast of ten characters and a chorus of 32. Jesus Christ will be played by Stewart Smith who starred as Freddy in My Fair Lady. Judas and John the Baptist are played by the same person and he is Kevin Bundy, an active member of last year's Summerhouse One troupe. Director Philip McMillan looks on Godspell as a theatrical event with a very serious message, that of loge for one's fellow man. He says the play is flexible for both the actors ,and the audience. It is simple in style but presents a strong .message. Without preaching, it stresses the Christian ethic in a light and pleasant way. Mr. McMillan says one of his reasons for choosing the play God - spell was because he felt that the students needed something that, had a good feeling about it. `It's a beautiful show to be in. It has a nice quality about it. It gives the students a chance to really explore the characters," he says. While directing, Mr. McMillan has been treating the material sensitively. The content of the show is sensitive material. The production has a circus or carnival motif, explains Mr. McMillan. Mime is involved and it looks as if the whole show is being improvised although it is structured, he says. 6odspett features a collage of all types of music --country, folk, rock and religious. Louise MacGregor is the pianist. Wayne MacAuley plays lead guitar; Mike Reynolds plays banjo and bass guitar; Angela MacDonald plays guitar;' and Debbie Shaddick plays the flute -recorder. The chorus uses tam- bourines and various noise makers, The'play has become a real school effort. A 'number of staff members who have never been involved in plays before are helping with tickets, publicity, construction of the set, wiring, etc. Godspell has been presented both as a Broadway play and a movie. Victor GarbVt -or Loncion, Ontario played Jesus in the movie. Curtain time for the G.D.C.I. production of Godspell is 8 p.m. Tickets are $2.50 for adults, $2 for stuents and X1.50 for children. Five weeks of steady rehearsing - coupled with the talept of G.D.C.I. drama club members should produce fine results. Recent evidence of the drama club members' talent is an outstanding achievement aivard which they won at the Canadian One Act Plays spell Festival last week in Galt. Fifteen schools were involved in the festival and four received outstanding achievement awards. The G.D.C.I. entry was Peasants, Kings and Warriors, wriften and - directed by teacher Warren Robinson and GODERICH SIGNAL• -STAR, THURSDAY, MAY 3 , 1979—PAGE 3 featuring a cast of 45.
