preciation for the British
Columbia coast.
Simon has just been
given' his very own
fishing pole, but he can't
seem to catch a ,single
salmon. When Simon
becomes excited on
sighting an eagle, the
great bird of prey drops
the catch -- a great
salmon at Simon's feet.
Simon must act quickly to
save the beautiful, but
dying fish. After all, he

can go fishing again
tomorrow, but not for
salmon for the bonds of
friendship are now too
strong.
Today, Ann Blades
lives in Vancouver where
she writes and paints. In
The Cottage at Crescent
Beach she writes an
autobiographical story
about summers that she
spent as a child at her
cottage at Crescent
Beach near Vancouver.
Cottagers along our Lake
Huron will easily identify
with her sunny days spent
sliding down sand hills
and climbing up into tree
forts.
While she taught school
in northern British
Columbia, she wrote two
special books about the
lives of children in
isolated communities. All
little girls know what
seven-year-old Mary, in
Mary of Mile 18, winner
of the 1972 Book of the
Year Award, feels like
when she longs to keep
her stray puppy and
father says "No".
A Boy of Tache is the
story of an Indian boy on
•a reserve today. In both

books, Ann recreates the
scenery, people and
activities of the com-
munity and shows the
same extraordinary
sense of the lonely beauty
of the Canadian north.
Ann appreciates
hearing from children
who have enjoyed
reading her stories, so
tell her how much you
liked these books in. a
letter you can send to her
