Support Children's
BY
CAROLINE E. CASS
If you 'are concerned
about the quality of your
child's reading material,
then you can help
determine the course of
Canadian literature for
children by supporting
the Children's- Book
Centre in Toronto. The
Centre needs the in-
volvement and co-
operation of parents,
teachers, booksellers and
librarians so that it can
continue to pursue its
goal of promoting the
reading and writing of
Canadian children's
books.
One way you ca,n help is
by becoming a member
of the Book Centre.
A member 'of the
Centre automatically
receives all regular and
several special member
mailings. Four times a
year, you'll receive the
"Children's Book News"
for adults which will be
packed with information
on new Canadian
children's books, news
from around the schools
and libraries and a
feature article on some
aspect of children's book
writing or publishing.
Four times a year you
will also receive "Book
Times", a magazine for
children. Each issue will
feature two pages of'book
reviews written
specifically for children,
an interview with an
author or illustrator,
games, puzzles, pictures
and contests.
The Centre believes
that ,ehildreo can be
motivated to read good
books by reading about
them, preferably in a
book related setting such
as a library, school or
bookstore.
In November of 1978 the
Centre organized an
across -Canada Children's
Book Festival. Children
ook Centre
had the opportunity to
hear and meet a
Canadian author and
read Canadian hooks.
Author Ted Harrison
(Children of the Yukon)
won the hearts of children
at Victoria Public School
in Goderich and
Holmesville Public
School. You can see their
impressive displays in
this issue of "The
Children's Book News". ,
It is projects like this
which will continue to
inspire the reading and
writing of good Canadian
children's books.

membership in such an
exciting endeavour,
please contact me at
Godelich Public Library.
Happy reading!!

Egg race cracks
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
The. Great Egg Race
"cracked them up" at
Victoria Public School for
the second year in a row
last Wednesday.
Just prior to Easter
was an appropriate time
for an egg race. The 20
entrants each had to
construct an "egg-
mobiYe" which had to be
large enough to hold one
egg and which could only
be propelled by one
elastic band. These egg -
mobiles then raced
against each other for
distance and were also
judged for best design.
It was quite a race.
Some of the little vehicles
wouldn't leave the
starting line much to the
embarrassment of their
owners. Some went
sideways and some fell
over. Some went forward
fine but then for some
mysterious reason, went
backwards again. An egg
even fell out of one of the
vehciles and cracked hut
didn't break.
All . of these things
delighted the crowd of
students who loudly
cheered on each egg -
mobile. These students
gave donations totalling
more than 530 to. watch
the race: This money will
be sent to Bunny Bundle,
a fund for crippled
children, of the London
area, including Goderich.
A variety of materials
were used to consturct
the egg -mobiles --
cardboard, wood,
records, film reels, egg
cartons, tin foil, etc. They
were judged for deisgn by
teacher Al Sumner with
partners Scott Stokes and–
