(Photo by Joanne Buchanan) ALPHA Huron PO:•tr BY CAROLINE CASS "Poetry begins in delight and ends in wisdom." (Robert Frost) Experience with poetry is an important part of a child's education. Poetry can be hilarious, ad- venturous, sensitive, or emotional. Poetry enriches the child's personal experience by bringing him or her into contact with the per- ceptions of other minds. I have chosen the following selections to be read aloud to young children for their -joy and pleasure: The stuff and nonsense root', of Fri YY'l rd Y r'lr for kids can and Ogden Nash are always favourites for their rhyme and rhythm. Watch how Mr. and Mrs. Spikky Sparrow outfit their family for spring. Have no fear of Custard, the cowardly dragon, with his "realio, trulio daggers on his toes", but do beware of the Wendigo's "slithery, slimy, scummy leathery tentacles." in Custard the Dragon and The Wen- digo. When We Were Very Young by A. A. Milne, introduces Christopher Robin to children. The rhymes are charming, h'',' -r,' rhothmiC, and Kingsbridge Kurriculum delightful. Hear Christopher Robin say, "There's nobody else in the world, and the world was made for me," a belief held firm by ail children! Take the child on your lap as you read to him and let him have the fun of reading all the poems printed in blue from John Ciardi's You read to me, I'll read to you. The poems cover a multitude of subjects -- About the Teeth of Sharks, Little Bits, How to Tell a Tiger and more cleverly written and humorous rhymes. I eat my peas with honey, I've done it all my Many thin life, They do taste kind of funny. But it keeps them on the knife." This poem is only a chuckle com- pared to the barrels of laughs you'll enjoy in A Great Big Ugly Man Came Up and Tied His Horse to Me! illustrated by Wallace Tripp. - Dennis; Lee's Alligator Pie and Garbage Delight are absolute musts for poetry reading. He allows the child's imagination to play on things she lives with every day. The nursery rhyme is there but Dobbins, pipers and pence have been replaced with "In Kamloops, Basketball teams busy BY HEATHER ANN STAPLETON AND LISA FRAYNE House league basketball for the junior and senior leagues has New recreation program starts "Recreation for Special Population", is the latest project at Vanastra Recreation Centre. In a letter to Prime Minister Trudeau the Federation requests "that the terms of reference and procedure issued by the Federal Government in January 1979 to the National Farm Products Marketing Council be withdrawn and that a new set be prepared only after thorough and adequate consultation with the farm community." Every clause in the guidelines is soundly criticized in the statement. In an interview Elbert van Donkersgoed, Executive Director of the Federation said: "There is no way the farmers will accept this. It will;; con- firm ,farmers' suspicions over the past several years that. Ottawa's agricultural policies are tipping away from producers towards consumers". In summary the critique says: "The consumer oriented emphasisof •these -i gu.del.in-es. ..... is... unac- ceptable. The National Farm Products Marketing Act is enabling legislation for farmers.
