BUCHANAN The Goderich Christian Reformed Church now has its own minister. He is the Reverend Wiebo A. Ludwig and he was of- ficially installed at a ceremony on Sunday, March 25. Rev. Ludwig, his wife Mamie Lou and their six children, moved to Goderich from Sioux Centre, Iowa (about 1,000 miles, away) in December of last year after Rev. Ludwig accepted his church's calling to Goderich. This is his second church. His first one was in Thunder Bay. Rev. Ludwig was born in the Netherlands and immigrated to the foothills of Alberta with his parents and seven brothers and sisters at the age of 10. The family lived in a log cabin and for awhile they even had to sleep on the floor of this cabin. Rev. Ludwig says he remembers really disliking school because he couldn't speak English and therefore found it difficult to communicate with those at school. He joined the Canadian navy at the age of 17 and became a "frogman" 'or ship's diver. After a few years in the navy, he left it and finished his high school education. He worked at many different jobs. He was an ap- prentice printer, a construction worker and a lumberjack. Then he decided to go back to school. He got his teaching degree and worked as a teacher - principal while con- templating a decision to enter the ministry. He attended Calvin College and Seminary i -n Michigan where he studied theology for four years to obtain his Masters of Diviniy degree. So many things were considered before •he made his decision to enter theiministry, that's its .difficult for him to pinpoint any one par- ticular reason for his final decision, he says. He feels that the church should play a strategic role in society. He sees a lot of work that can be done in the church to build a life for God's people. 'The Goderich Christian Reformed -Church was formed as an off shoot of the Clinton Christian Reformed Church. It has about 200 members and they meet at Robertson Memorial Public School. With a lot of volunteer labor, the congregation is hoping to build their own church building within a year. • Rev. Ludwig says he is really impressed with Goderich and the people .F The Goderich Christian Reformed Church, which was formed from a spill over of the Clinton Christian Reformed Church, now has its own minister. He is the Reverend Wiebo A. Ludwig. Rev. Ludwig moved to Goderich on December 1 with his wife and six children. He was officially installed on March 25. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan) he has met here. He feels that the people have a good moral sense. At his official in- stallation on Sunday morning, his father -in - lar „ the 12everend B.J. Haan, preached the sermon. Rev. Haan is the president of Dordt College, a liberal arts college in Iowa which Rev. Ludwig attended. New Horizons is a federal government program that enables retired people to create projects of their own choosing. It offers grants to groups of retired people who undertake activities for the benefit of themselves and others in the community. he accent is on local 'needs as seen by older people and on their willingness to meet such needs. The Octogenarian Room, a spare room at the local library where octogenarian ' men meet to play .=cards, was in- spected by the Board of Health and the Fire Marshall's Office some time . ago. Upon these investigations, it was decided that the room had to' be brought up to both health and fire standards. A committee of seniors was formed to list the renovations which would be needed to do this. The town agreed.'to supply the materials with members of the Kinsmen Club to supply the labor. New washrooms and a fire, door were installed. The room was also in- sulated and will receive a new heating system.
