Four in five will NOT get cancer!
Seven steps to good health
Have a medical
and dental checkup
Feel perfectly healthy?
Great! But shouldn't you get the check-up
habit and make sure?
You're, too busy - meetings, out with your
friends, you like to spend time with your kids -
and besides - you wouldn't dream of seeing a
doctor when nothing is wrong.
But doesn't your good health make all this
possible? Why not protect it?
Take time - see your doctor on a regular basis.
Give him the opportunity to detect problems at
an early stage and give yourself a better chance
for complete cure.
Today there are thousands of Canadians who
have had cancer and who are alive and well and
cured.
Your doctor will know the need for a "procto"
(examination of the bowels) and if you are a
woman will carry out a pap test.
Your -dentist too! More than just shiny teeth -
he can also recognize conditions in the mouth
which should receive prompt attention.
Demonstrate for good health. Make that ap-
pointment today. It's a,good habit to get into.

Watch your
state of health
Find out about
any lump or sore
that does not heal
Would you keep it to yourself?
We hope not— it may be trying to tell you
something — it may even be asking' for help.
How do you know?
Well, at first you may notice a change in your
normal state of health.
And what is normal, you ask. That's a difficult
question. Everyone is different. -
However, certain symptoms such as persistent
difficulty in swallowing, coughing nor hoarseness
that doesn't go away, and unexplained weight
loss or bleeding, are not normal. Nor is a sore
that doesn't heal or a lump that doesn't disap-
pear.
Perhaps you, recognize these as possible signs
of cancer. Possible—yes,,. but most likely not.
Many other diseases have these symptoms.
What should you do? A prompt visit to your
doctor is your best bet against any illness —
particularly cancer because most types respond
well to treatment if they are detected in the early
stages.
Your body communicates.
Are you listening?

Protect yourself
against too much
sunlight
Consider this...
The frequency of cancer of the skin ranks first
in men and third in women in this country. And
for a long time now it has been known that this
type ofcancer can be caused by excessive ex-
posure to the sun.
Take cover, workers. Anyone who must work
in the sun - fishermen, farmers, lifeguards,
construction workers... wear a shirt and a hat
and if you are light -skinned meaning that you do
not have the natural protection of pigment in the
skin, take double care.
Sun worshippers. Sunshine is great, but too
much may be -unhealthy. A glorious tan is -not
always a sign of good health. To protect yourself,
try a wide -brimmed hat or beach cover-up. Use a
protective lotion.
See a doctor if you notice a change in your skin
condition (a change in a mole, a sore that doesn't
heal) .
Skin cancer" can be successfully treated - but
give your doctor an early start just to make sure.
Do not smoke
+++
What are the facts? 'Your risk of dying of lung
cancer, heart disease and emphysema is much
greater if you are a cigarette smoker.
Heavy cigarette smokers lose ten years of life.
Cigarette smoking can contribute to stomach
ulcers, cancer of the bladder, and of course
cause accidents arid -fires.
Women who smoke tend to have smaller
babies.
You spend nearly $15,000 on cigarettes in your
lifetime if you smoke a pack a day.
Fewer Canadian doctors are now smoking.
They know the facts.

Have a Pap test
Do a monthly
breast
self-examination
The Canadian Cancer Society recommends
that all women practise breast self-examination
(BSE) and have a regular pap test.
Here's all you do... .
PAP TEST
Ask your doctor about a simple test called a
pap test - a breakthrough in cancer prevention
discovered by Dr. D.G. Papanicolaou in 1928.
Your doctor will gather some cells from the
fluid of the vagina. They are then examined k,
under a microscope. This examination can
detect cancer at its earliest stage - so very im-.
portant for successful treatment.
If you are aver 20, have a PAP TEST as often
as your doctor suggests. It is painless, not un-
comfortable, and takes only' a few minutes of
your time.
BREAST SELF-EXAMINATION•
Sit or stand before a mirror. Note any change
in the shape or size of your breasts or any
puckering of the skin or nipples.
The purpose of BSE is to feel for any lump in
your breasts. This is best done shortly after your
period.
One way is to lie on your bed• with a folded
towel under your right shoulder and your right
hand under your head. Examine your right
breast using your fingertips in gentle circular
motions. Be sure to examine each quarter of
your breast.
Include the nipple area. Also examine your
armpit. Repeat for left breast with your left hand
under your head. See your doctor about any lump
you may find. Most do not mean cancer but only
hecan tell. -- — _...._.-. – ._..._._.......... ....:._ _...._.....
Some women dp find that BSE is more easily
done while bathing. You might like to ask your
doctor what method he. would recommend.
