vent dome on his truck
and lets the aroma of his
food drift over the whole
Square.
What makes his food so
good? Laird says it's
because he prep.ares it
with tender loving care..
He also has an antiq-ue
copper boiler which he
feels gives his hot dog
buns a special flavor that
onedoesn't find
anywhere else.'
During Jubilee 3 year,
1977, when Laird was still
working for Dirk, he says
people would sometimes
be waiting for him before
he even got the truck to
the corner. He remem-
bers not being able to see
the end of the line-up one
night and another night
he was not able to close
until 3 or 4 a.m. because
the people just kept on
coming. One• customer
jokingly told him that he
had been waiting in line
for three days.
Laird did run out of hot
dogs once. He shudders at
the thought.
"I hope that . never
happens again. Some
people become downright
hostile when you tell
them you've run out," he
laughs.
Laird's prices, like
everything else, these
days, are up from Pete's
.prices of days- gone by.
His hot dogs are 65 cents,
his pop is 35 cents and his
popcorn ranges from 25 to
75 cents.
Still the customers
keep coming.
Laird is convinced that
a popcorn -hot dog
business would not work
as well in any other small
town as it does in
Goderich: • It's because
the Square is the hub of
activity in the town. Both
highways (21 and 8) lead
to the corner Of Hamilton
Street and the Square.for
people coming into
Gode•rich's business
section.
It's also because Pete
paved the way with his
popcorn -hot dog business.
"There's been a hot dog
wagon on that corner for
more than 40 years,"
says Laird. "People still
ask for "Popcorn Pete".
They still remember
him."
Ironically, Laird says
when he was younger, he
used to be Pete's
paperboy. Little did he
know back then that he
would some day take over
the popular little pop-
corn -hot dog business
that was once Pete's and
carry on Goderich's tasty
tradition.
