f
given by Colleen Maguire
on the late Tom Thom son,
"The Marr, the Artist, and
the Mystery''.
Colleen read this paper
with the aplomb of a
lawyer giving evidence at
a trial. It touched on
many aspects of Tom
Thornson's life not
commonly known.
He painted one of his
famous pictures_ 'Nor-
thern Lights" by lamp
'light in .an unoccupied
cabin, going to the open
door from time to time to
view this miracle of
moving light. '
His untimely death
robbed Canada of a much
greater legacy of his
gem -.like art than we now
have.
Although he was mostly
self-taught, artists who
knew him said• that he
rarely misplaced a brush
stroke on bis canvas. This
is indeed genius.
Colleen gave a detailed
account of his mysterious
death by so-called
drowning, and 'the later
inept. _inves.tigatlons
. by.
numerous people. There
was only one man known
to dislike him in the
Algonquin area, and of
course, no evidence of his
involvement in Thom -
son's death.
However, after
listening to the evidence
leading up to his disap-
pearance and
proceedings afterwards,
as well as scientific
evidence that was not
taken into consideration,
most anyone would
assume that his ,death
was no accident, but a
crime. committed by
someone who went free.
There was little to
suggest a motive.
He was an expert
canoeist fishing at the
time in calm water. His
,body didn't surface for
eight days, and scientists
agreed that only an at-
tached weight could hold
a body down that long.
Rescuers found fishing
tackle wound seventeen
times around one leg.
It is difficult to un-
derstand why the in-
vestigation was. so
shallow except that Tom
Thomson was a poor
artist whom famehad not
yet overtaken.
Every listener agreed
that this • was a com-
pelling story told in an
exciting way.
The meeting adjourned
for refreshments and a
social hour.
On April 20 the art club
will meet at the home of
Glady---Ladd- at Black's
Point.

st
anet Amos named at Blyth
After a lengthy search,
the Board of Directors of
the Blyth Centre for the
Arts has named Janet
Amos as associate
director and as the
successor in 1980 to
James Roy as artistic
director of the Blyth
Summer Festival.
Ms. Amos was selected
from more than 30 ap-
plicants and brings • a
wide range -of experience
to the position. She is
perhaps best known for
her work as an actress on
CBC television in the
series "A Gift to Last"
and in specials such as
The Masseys and in
theatre at the Shaw
Festival where she
played Major Barbara in
1978. She has also played
many important roles
with Theatre Passe
Muraille in the past.
It was for her ability as
a director, however, that
Ms. Amos was chosen for
the Blyth position. She
has previously directed
plays in Toronto and at
the 1977 Blyth Summer
Festival.
Mrs, Sheila Richards
president of the Board of
Directors of the Blyth
Centre, said that it was
Ms. Amos' feeling for the
region served by the
theatre and her com-
mitment to the unique
mandate of the Blyth
Festival that was the
deciding factor in her
choice from a list of
strong candidates.
Although Toronto -born,
Ms. Amos has had a
strong contact with the
area served by the Blyth
theatre since 1972 when
she was a member of the
Theatre Passe Muraille
company that put
together The Farm Show
near Clinton, a few miles
away. She has since
returned with several
other productions and is
also married to an area
native, Ted Johns, who
wrote and performed the
1978 Festival hit
production, The' School
Scandal. -
Ms. Amos said she
would like to carry on and
build upon the foundation
built by Roy and his wife
Anne who have directed
the Festival since its
inception in 1975. Roy set
the policy of producing
Canadian plays of
specific interest to the
small town and rural
audience of the Western
Ontario region.
