Baseball clinics
planned here
The paper has recent)
learned of an interesting
development in Minor
Baseball circles. Dennis
Schooley, Manager for
the Stratford Hillers in
the Major Intercounty
Baseball League, will be
offering clinics in our
, area for interested
ballplayers. The clinics
will take place in local
parks and will consist of
daytime Instruction for
one week in July or
August.
Schooley, who has had
six years experience in
the Major Intercounty,
stated that the program
will be offered in a
number' of smaller
centres as well as the
majority of Intercounty
cities. He indicated that
the instructors for the
clinics will be from the
Hillers and . other
Intercounty teams.
When asked about the
origin of the program,
Schooley replied, "You
constantly hear that
Canadian boys do not
receive top quality
coaching. This is fairly
evident with the majority
of boys that come through
the minor systems to play
Intercounty. Although the
boy may be a great
athlete, he lacks the
proper techniques and
training methods.
Therefore,he has to learn
these things •at age 20
instead of when . he is
young. I feel that if a boy
can be taught the proper
fundamentals when he is',
young, he can develop
into a . much better
ballplayer than a boy who
learns at age 20."
"Baseball is a 4'ery
,complicated and
technical game. Although
there are some very good
minor ball coaches, it
cannot be expected that a
parent donating his time
-to-coach,-o- r a -local sports
buff who may be a coach,
could know all the
strategies, techniques
y and training methods
requ ed. For these
reass, I hake spent the
last few months
researching the many
facets of the game. I have
read bo.oks and articles,
obtained professional
programs and U.S.
Varsity programs in
order to develop a
program that can be
taught to minor league
ballplayers at various
age levels. With these
things and the aid of my
instructors, we feel that
we can offer top quality
coaching to any
ballplayers in the area."
When asked if he en-
countered any problems
in the development of the
program, Schooley an-
swered, "Naturally,
there is apprehension on
the part of people
because it is a. new idea.
This makes it a little
difficult to explain what I
am doing. However, I
really haven't run into
any problems. The
O.B.S., Major Inter -
_county League, W.O.A.A.
and all the minor
organizations have given
me full cooperation and
feel that it is a great
concept. Of course, the
organizational, research,
scheduling and ad-
rninistrative
requirements are im-
mense. However, I
realized that this would
be the case when I
began."
Schooley explained that
he is in the process of
distributing application
forms through the minor
baseball organizations in
various .,centres. He"
explained that once the
forms have been
distributed, he will
continue •to upgrade the
program and wait for the
response. ,
Localbaseball
associations will contact
players about the school
and the starting dates.
Applications will be
accepted until April 30.
