Sister City invitation to Irish
BY
LESLIE E. ARNDT
BAY CITY TIMES
Bay City, Michigan,
Goderich's sister city in
international friendship
across Lake Huron,
extends an invitation to
everyone in Goderich to
visit it this weekend as it
observes the 25th an-
niversary of a St.
Patrick's Day parade
that has won recognition
all the way to the
Emerald Isle.
"We are pleased to
hear that city councillors,
the Royal Canadian
Legion, your Huron
County Museum bus and
curator Ray Scotchmer,
at least two busloads and
dozens of motorists, and
other Goderich
representatives will be
with us, and we want to
thank the Goderich
Signal:Star newspaPer,
the tourist committee
headed by Bert Squires
and Bert Such, Mac
Campbell and everyone
else who had a hand in
making this delegation
possible," says James
Leonard, parade
association president.
The parade is set for 2
p.m. Sunday on a route
down Center Avenue
through the downtown
business district. Mel
Weaver is this year's
parade marshal. More
than 150 units will be in
the parade. A post -
parade party starts at 5
p.m. Sunday at the
downtown Washington
After Dark showplace.
Most of the Goderich
delegation will arrive in
Bay City early Saturday
afternoon and will
headquarter at the
Holiday Inn downtown.
American Legion Post 18
clubrooms will be busy.
The museum bus will be
on display Friday and
Saturday at Hampton
Square Mall shopping
centre on Bay City's
eastern outskirts. It will
be in the parade Sunday.
Bay City is not exactly
that much Irish. With
only the Irish, the parade
may not have long en-
dured. But St. Patrick's

Day for Bay Cityans is a
time when ale "melting
pot" Americans become
instant sons or daughters]
of Erin. Poles, French,
Germans, Belgians,
Mexicans, blacks and
Cai adians - people of all
races and creeds - don
Kelly green ties or green
carnations to strut as
Ga.eis for ,a day. And
some in Bay City will be
strutting three days on
this big Irish weekend.
The Irish played a key
role in early Bay City
settlement. Local history
highlights such Irish -
American pioneers as
James G. Birney,
presidential candidate
twice; his son, James,
lieutenant governor and
state senator; John
Riley, on whose reser-
vation lands Bay City
lies; John McGraw, who
built the world's largest
lumber mill here in his
time, and Thomas A. E.
Weadock, an outstanding
State Supreme Court
justice in his day.
This only parade to
survive in Bay City
(there were once French
and Polish parades, too)
started with an Irish joke.
Three Bay City Irish -
Americans a quarter of a
century ago were won-
dering what they 'might
do in special efforts to
mark St. Patrick's Day in
rad
more appropriate fashion
than a visit to the nearby
pub. And though the
parade idea at first didn't
have much of an enduring
ring for mid-March, what
the late Jimmie Donohue,
Jim Gates and Jack
O'Shea "hatched" at a
Lions Club luncheon has
survived despite weather
at times more favorable
for the Minneapolis
Winter Carnival. Only.
one parade had to be
postponed - one' week -
because of stormy
weather.
The University of Notre
Dame famed marching
band has headed up two
parades, and two of Bay
City's parade queens
have gone all the way to
represent Michigan in the
international Rose of
Tralee contest at Tralee
near Killarney in Ireland.
