Jr. Vikings win Hiron

The GDCI Junior
Vikings won the Huron -
Perth boys basketball
championship Tuesday
with a convincing 49-38
win in the third and
deciding game.
The victory secured the
championship for the
Vikings and the 11 point
spread in the final score
was the largest in the
three games between the
teams.

The final was less dramatic as evidenced by the 49-

The final game had
shades of game two in
Stratford when the
Vikings squandered an
eight point lead but
managed a spirited
overtime victory.
Tuesday the Vikings,built
up a Lead of 14 points at
one point and then
watched .it slip to five
before they 'regained
their composure.
The juniors held a slim
21-20 lead; at half time
although 'early in the
game they gave in-
dications of building up a
sizeable lead. The Vikes
put the game away in the
third quarter outscoring
Stratford 13-2 to hold a 34-
22 lead heading into the
final eight minutes.
Goderich was out-
scored by Stratford 15-16
in the final quarter.
Jim Costello led the
Viking scoring with 19
points in a fine effort. Ted
Doherty undoubtedly
played his finest game of
the season both defen-'
sively and offensively
and hit for 15 points. More
important, Doherty hit
for nine points in the final
quarter when Stratford
was quickly nibbling
away at the Vikings lead.
Seven of Doherty's points
in the final quarter came
from nine free throw
attempts.
Phil Aubin was also
strong for the Vikes and
hit for seven points while
Mike Wedlock added four
and Steve Gallow and"
Rob MacDonald chipped•
in with a basket apiece.
Last Friday the GDCI
junior Vikings came back
with a clutch 54-52.

Saturday here the
Mustangs won the -
opening game, of the
series 11-1. Sunday in
Amherstburg the score
was 13-1. Third game of
the series 'was played
Tuesday night in
Amherstburg.,If a fourth
game is necessary, it will
be played . here tonight
(Thursday) at 8:30 p.m.
The Mustangs
dominated play in the two
weekend games, moving
the puck well and playing
good positional hockey.

Amherstburg, on the
other hand; showed little
in the way of team play,
and spent a total . of 104
minutes in the penalty
box in the' first two
games. The Mustangs
penalty total was only 30
minutes.
Goderich officials had
expected a much better
series from the
Amherstburg team. Last
year when the Mustangs
were OMHA finalists, the
Windsor -area team,
Shoreline, provided their
best opposition up to, the
final series with Hunt-
sville. '
The winner of the
Goderich-Amherstburg
series will meet the
Winner of New -Hamburg
and Glanbrook in the All -
Ontario semi-finals. New
Hamburg and Glanbrook
are currently tied 1-1, in
Randy Gaynor of the Green and Parent midgets

Trebish each had a goal
and two assists. Larry
Gaynor and Jim Costello

each. Don Elliott got the
other Goderich goal.
Larry Madge had four
assists. John Clement,
Mike Wedlock and Ken
Reid each had one assist.
Despite the large
number of goals scored
d'gainst him, goaltender
Ed Bondyy was the out-
standing Amherstburg
player.
On Sunday in
Aiherstburg, Larry
Madge' and Dan Maillet
led the Goderich scoring
parade with three goals
and two assists each.
Mike Hodges had two
goals and three assists.
Rob Trebish also scored
twice for the Mustangs.
Rob McDonald scored
once and had two assists.
Mark Rowe had a goal
and an assist and Larry
Gaynor got the other
Goderich goal. Don
Elliott had two assists
and Jim Costello had one.
Mark Bondy scored the
only Amherstburg goal
Sunday. Greg 'Faucher
was the Amherstburg
marksman in game one.
Steve Gallow played in
goal for Goderich in
game one while Brian
Shewfelt was between the
pipes in game two.

The Vikings led
through most of the game
and held a 29-23 edge at
half time. The fine
shooting of the Ramblers'
Frank McCarrol, who
wound up with 20 points,
kept Stratford close.
Mike Wedlock and Phil
Aubin had 18 points
apiece for the Vikings.
Aubin scored four of his
points in the overtime.
Jim Costello had 12 points
for Goderich. Ted
Doherty added four and
Steve Gallow had two. -
The Ramblers won the
first game of the final
series 42-36 here last
Thursday. Viking coach
Lynn Meyers felt his
team had a poor game.
"We stopped doing things
we normally do well and
committed " too many
turnovers," said Meyers.
Ted Doherty and Steve
Gallow had 10 points each
for the Vikings. Mike
Wedlock added six, Phil
Aubin and Jim 'Costello
had four each and Mike
Murphy had two points.
Mark VandenVen had 13
points and Geoff
Deleplanque had 11 for
Stratford.
.The Vikings qualified
for the final series with
an easy 65-21 ,win over
Listowel in semi-final
sudden -death play here
last Tuesday. The
Vikings press and strong
offence totally dominated
play: Listowel was unable
to score any points in the
third quarter.
Jim Costello led the
Vikings with 16 points.
Phil Aubin added 14. Ted
Doherty with eight, Steve
Gallow, Mike Murphy
and Andy Masse with six
each and George Kerr
and Mike Wedlock, with
four apiece, rounded out
the Viking attack.

Sailors sweep Wingham series

The Goderich Sailors
earned the right to battle
first place Mildmay in the
OHA Intermediate . C
playoffs after disposing
of Wingham in four
straight games.
Last week the Sailors
jumped in front of.
Wingham by two games
in their best -of -seven set
and, this past weekend
they "Out an abrupt end to
the series 'with victories
of 5-3 and 3-2.
On Friday the Sailors
got a' three -goal per -

tied 1-1 after the first

Sailors outscored
'Wingham 3-1 in the
second period to hold a 4-2

Wingham took the lead

game 1-1 with a goal late
in the first period
Wingham again took the
Iead early 'in the second
period.
But the Sailors tok over
from that point and two
straight goals by Duncan
in the second period and a
third by Grant Shelton
boosted the Sailors into •a
4-2 lead heading into the
final period.
Wingham pulled within
a goal of,the Sailors' early
in the third period but a
goal by Ron Sowerby at
13.31 put Goderich back
into a two -goal cushion.
The Royals refused to
bow from the playoffs
easily Saturday and the
Sailors needed third'
period goals from Dirk
Wolterbeeck and Greg
Jervis to win 3-2 and
claim the series in lour
straight games.
The teams were tied 1-1
after the first period of
play with Paul Kelly
scoring the Sailors goal
from Graham Hamilton.
The teams played
through °a scoreless
second period and
Goderich wrapped the
series with the goals by
Wolterbeeck and Jervis.
Wingham replied with a
power play effort by Tom
Irwin.
Jim Frayne played a
strong game in net for the
Sailors Saturday blocking
several close in chances.
TheSailors began a
best -of -seven series with
Mildmay Wednesday and.
the second game will be
played in the. Goderich
Memorial Community
Centre this Friday at 8.30
p.m. The fourth game of
the series mill be in
Godericl'i March 14.
Goderich tied Mildmay
for top -spot after regular
season play but lost the
pennant by virtue of the
goals for and against
statistics. In the four
games played between
the teams this season,
each club won two and
the series promises to be
a close one.
Merchants sweep series
with Kettle Point

The Goddrich Mer-
chants -wrapped up their
first round series with
Kettle Point in three
straight games with two
playoff victories last
week.
After an opening game
victory in the series the
Merchants mad eshort
order of Kettle Point with
a ,4-2 ,.win in, Thedford,,
Saturday and a con-
vi'nCing 6-2"victory in
Goderich Monday.
The win Monday
earned the Merchants a
berth in the league semi-
finals against the winner
of the Hensall-Centralia
series. Centralia
currently leads that
series by two games and
the third game will be
played Thursday.
The Merchants lied
their. hands full in the
Thedford game as Kettle
Point held a 2=0 lead
through the first half of
the game. Buf a rash of
penalties killed the Point
attack and Goderich
rallied to tie the game 2-2
after two periods and
scored two goals in the
final period to -pick up the
win. . -
• Greg Hansen got the
Merchants back in the
game scoring on a power
play in the second period
to lift the Merchants
within a goal. Phil Petrie
thentied the game before
the close of the second
period with a goal from -
linemates Len Kolkman
and Phil Paquette.
Goderich took a one -
goal lead early in the
final period on a goal by
Paquette and
CamMcDonald added the
insurance marker in the
final minute of play.
The Merchants put an
end to the series here
Monday as they piled a 4 -
first period lead and
parlayed i into a 6-2 win.
Paul Corriveau and
Len Kolkman scored first
period goals for.Goderich
and Cam ,'•McDonald
added a pair for a 4-0 lead
after 20 minutes of play.
Frank Hagen scored the
only goal of the second
period and John Hoy
boosted the Merchants
into a six -goal lead with a
goal early in the final
period.
With the game well in
hand the Merchants gave.
up two goals"in the dying
minutes to spoil Doug
Spitzig's shutout bid.
Wood seventh
in Ontario final
Goo wrestler, Chris
Wood, finished in seventh
place in the Ontario
secondary school
championships held in
Ottawa on the weekend.
Wood won the Huron -
Perth title in the 75 kg.
class and qualified for the
Ontario final with a first
place finish in WOSSA at
Stratford.
He fought four matches
in Ottawa and won two
while losing two.
Wrestling coach, Ray
Donnelly, said the
competition was of a high-
calibre and that many of
the wrestlers ,had par -'I
ticipated in international
meets.
