Decorate New Horne for Old -Fashioned Romance
For most young couples
setting up their first home,
the biggest challenge is
making it feel like home.
Creating warmth and cozi-
ness. Putting down roots.
Maybe that's one reason
why traditional furnishings
— especially those turn -of -
the -century looks — are so
popular.
In fact, if there's ene big
trend in home decorating to-
day, it can be summed up in
three little words: old is new.
And, it's also- a wonderful
way to make your nest as ro-
mantic as you feel.
So, you haunt country
auctions and downtown junk
shops in search of those spe-
cial pieces full of the quirks
and personality ,of times
gone by. You snap up coun-
try chairs and oaken tables,
hall coat trees, old photo-
graph albums, stained glass
-panels, name it. And you've
probably found that you can
get a whole roomful of old-
time ambience just by using
a nostalgic, flowered wall -
covering.
But, while you're cre-
ating..this m. ood.,.of..auld lang
syne, don't neglect that very
modern part of the house —
the bathroom. You wouldn't
want to break the spell by
stepping into a bland, mod-
ern bathroom and you
don't have to.
There are dozens of things
you can do to make the bath
as .mellow as the rest of the
house. For starters, con-
sider these ideas:
• Use wood. There's no
mellower material than
wood — and properly treat-
ed, wood is just as easy -care
as plastic.
• For a 19th century look,
add a dado of narrow
tongue -and -groove plank-
ing. Use planking as a
cover-up for ordinary tile
.walls — just be sure all
joints are well sealed.
• Quickest way to create
old-style charm is with wall -
coverings. To find one that
just fits the mood you want,
check out the wallcovering
books at your local store.
For example, a new book
called "Wall -Tex At Its
Best" offers a variety of
charming florals, stripes and
other old-time goodies. One
delightful Victorian pair of
coordinates is called, "You
Must Remember This" and
— guess what? — "A Kiss is
Still a Kiss." What a per-
fect way to start your new,
romantic life! Hint: designs
like these are ideal for coor-
dinating-thebedroom and its.._
bath.
• Cover tissue boxes and
other accessories with left-
over .wallcovering.
• Be inventive. in adding
small touches with a period
flavor — including personal
collections, like shelves of
antique medicine bottles.
A SCATTERING, OF CHERUBS on the walls, plus a mix of period accessories,
create a roma- is bathroom spiced with wit. Whimsical wallcovering dubbed
"That's Cherru, .e", is from brand new collection called "Wall -Tex At Its Best',
all in scrubbable, fabric -backed vinyl. t '
•Mount old postcards or
photographs on fabric and
insert them in dime store
frames. Hang them in a
group to make a really
strong statement.
• Find an important mir-
ror with an old-fashioned,
carved wood frame . .. or
add an oak frame to your
medicine chest's door.
•Try to fit in an old plant
stand, crowned with a lush
fern.
• For lighting, consider
hurricane sconces or simple
globes reminiscent of 19th
century gaslights.
• And, if you want to ga
all-out for period fun, you
Page 21,
can even buy basic bath-
room equipment — tank,
seat, etc. — all in golden
oak, just like those of
Grandpa's day.
So., be as imaginative and
romantic in decorating your
bathroom as you are with
the rest of the house. You'll
enjoy the fun! f
