Lions to launch appeal
This year's Easter Seal
appeal will get underway
officially on March 5
according t campaign
chairman Harold Knisley
of the Lions Club of
Goderich.
In announcing the start
of the six-week long
campaign which runs
until Easter Sunday,
April 15, Mr. Knisley
expressed confidence in
his club's ability to meet
their local objective of'
$3,200.
Throughout Ontario,
236 service clubs af-
filiated with the Ontario -
Society for Crippled
Children will be aiming at
a provincial objective of
$3,000,000 needed to
maintain essential
rehabilitation services.
for thousands of Ontario's
physically handicapped
children.
"I don't know if people
fully realize just how
much time and effort
goes ' into getting this
appeal ready each year,"
said Mr. Knisley, "but
it's for a good cause and
our members are glad to
volunteer their time to
work on it."
Last year, residents in
the Goderich area con-
tributed $3035.40 to the
appeal and chairman
Knisley is confident that
this year's response will
be even better.
"When people receive
their appeal in the mail,"
said Mr. Knisley, "I hope.
they will do more than
just give a thought to
these youngsters. These
kids are fighters but they
need a bit of help. That's
why we are " asking
everyone to help by
sending in their Easter
Seal donations as soon as
possible."
New teaching aid
Borg-Warner
Educational Systems, the
educational unit of the
multi -national Borg-
Warner Corporation, has
announced, plans to in-
troduce an audio-visual
learning system called
System 80 to the
educational community
in Ontario early this
spring.
Featuring an audio-
visual unit which
resembles a small
television set, the system
offers more than 900
programmed in-
structional lessons in
phonics, reading,
spelling, language arts
and mathematics. It is
designed to provide
teachers with a quick and
accurate method of not
only diagnosing a
student's individual
learning problems but
also of prescribing the
precise materials that
student needs in order to
correct those problems.
System 80 was on-
troduced in the United
States in 1969 and there
are currently more than
50,000 of the audio-visual
units in use in schools
th-ere. Independent
evaluations conducted by
school officials in
Chicago, Washington,
D.C. and other cities have
confirmed Borg-
Warner's assertion that
System 80 is highly ef-
fective in helping
students learn at a
satisfactory rate.
While System 80 has
been used on a limited
basis. in a number of
Canadian elementary
schools, this marks Borg-
Warner's first major
effort to market the
materials to the
educational community
here.

Fat girl is heroineinGreenFat kingdom novel..
BY CAROLINE CASS
The following novels
are only a few examples
of the kinds of realistic
fiction that can be found
at the Goderich Public
L brary. Young people
find these novels ap-
pealing because the
characters bring to life
those complicated,
confusing times between
childhood • and
adolescence.
Dinah, of Dinah and the
Green Fat Kingdom by
Isabelle Holland, suffers.
from over -eating. It's her
problem all right, but
everyone makes it their
business to help her lose
weight. Her favorite
escape from this constant
nagging and humiliation
is her tree, where she
writes of a fantastic
kingdom where fat people
are beautiful. Only after
she makes new friends,
especially her ugly
puppy, Francis, can she
deal with an obnoxious
cousin, her mother, and
above all herself.
Imagine having your
cat used for television
commercial advertising!
Well, when Elizabeth
'Secretly answers the ad
for TV cats, little does she
know the consequences.
Her father is the New
Products Director for a
rival cat food company.
See how Elizabeth solves
her problems in Lights,
Camera, Cats! by Pat
Grant Porter.
"One summer two boys
and a girl went to a foster
home to live together."
Harvey suffered two
broken legs when his
father ran over them in
his new Grand Am.
Thomas J. was
discovered for the first
time in six years and
nobody knows who he is
or where he comes from.
Carlie figures the three of
them are like pinballs
because they don't get to
settle where they want.
Eventually, they learn
differently in The Pin -
balls, an upbeat story of
children disappointed by
their parents by Betsy
Byars.
Teddi knows that to be
a dancer she'll have to
give up her cheerleading,
her dates and even her
favourite foods. Yet,
sacrifices are a must for
her lessons with her new
love and dance teacher,
Justin Falk. Teddi
definitely has a case of
Ballet Fever!
The Lady of the
Strawberries is the most
outstanding story of a
young girl's life in the
Canadian West. Jessica
misses her mother even
though she knows her
mother was never happy
on the isolated farm in
Alberta. She eases her
loneliness with her Indian
