The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-03-01, Page 33Although the shipping
season on the Great
Lakes won't be opening
for another several weeks
about 50 residents of
Goderich gathered at
Knox Presbyterian
Church Sunday night to
offer sailors their
blessing during the 1979
season. The people
turned out for the 76th
Mariner's Service in
Goderich.
The annual non-
denominational . church
service was conducted by
the Reverend Lockhart
Royal.
Knox Church has
hosted the annual service
since its inception in 1903.
At that time the event
GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, MARCH 1 , 1979—PAGE 11A
ervice hel
was called the Fisherman
and Sailor service. In
1913, after the Great
Storm on the lakes that
claimed the lives of many
sailors, people associated
with the marine trade
organized\ the Mariner's
Service.
Arnold McConnell said
Sunday night the service
at Knox Church was
changed because of the
large number of people in
the Goderich area that
were associated with
sailing. McConnell said
the year after the 27
sailors were washed up
on the shores of Lake
Huron near Goderich
-organizers of the
Fisherman and Sailor
service altered the event
to include anyone in-
volved with the marine
trade. He said the service
is usually well attended
claiming it has been
witnessed by over 400
people. But he said
Sunday's service was
sparsely attended
because of weather
conditions and the
televised Wintario draw.
Knox Church was
decorated for the,. service
with pennants of shipping
companies that sail the
lakes, life preservers and
artifacts taken from
ships lost during the
Great Storm.
Letter tells Chapel of life in Mexico
Excerpts from a letter
by Norm and Hilda
Sparling, serving in
Mexico as missionaries
under the Unevangelized
Fields Mission, were
shared at Huron Men's
Chapel Sunday, telling of
their experience as new
Missionaries: buying
meat wrapped in banana
leaves; eating in smoke-
filled mountain homes
caused by open fires on
their earthen stoves used
to prepare their meals;
tasting Moli, a native
dish served with a hot
spice - sauce; and ex-
periencing for the first
time, travelling by jeep
over mud -packed roads
which are often blocked
by land slides, were some
of the interesting ex-
periences they have had
;IQ they have travelled to '
the Sierras to share
Christ with the native
people.
Mrs. Cecil Wittich sang
several vocal selections ;tb
whicha included - He is
still the King of Kings and
Lord of Lords, Miracles,
and Somehow the Saviour
seems a little nearer
when I kneel down to
pray.
It was announced that
the faith - promise of-
fering would be adopted
for support of World
Missions during the
conference on World
Missions in March.
People's Church in
Toronto has operated on
this type of faith -
promise offering and it
has resulted in many
people experiencing
great blessing as_God has
honoured their faith in
providing what they in
faith were prompted by
the Spirit to promise in
offering for the coming
year.
Pastor Wayne F. Good
pointed out in his
message based on Paul's
prayer in Ephesians
chapter one, how
spiritual values are
shown to all by the Holy
Spirit, who enables all to
live "In Christ" through
the same power which
God exercised when He .
raised Christ from the
grave and set Him on His
own right hand in heaven,
• far above all power and
might and dominion both
in this world and in the
world to come.

A pastor, stood at the
sick bed Of his 14 -year-old
niece. She didn't know -
but those who stood at her
bedside did - that before
the week, was up, she
would fall into her final
sleep. She was sure that
her illness was. only "a
rare kind of anemia," but
her parents knew that it
was leukemia. It had
been just that day that
the doctor had told the
parents that medical
science could hold no
hope. A few days more
and the dread disease
would take its toll.
Later the pastor wrote,
"What could we say to the
distressed mother as we
drove her from, the
hospital to our home that
evening?, Surely nothing
that had happened in the
past few days had made
any sense at all. Nathalie
had been an honour
student in her first year
at high school, had ex-
celled in sports and
showed promise in the
field of music. Only four
weeks before she had
romped in the vigor and
bloom of youth, as
carefree as any of her
classmates. That night
she lay limp, in the pallor
of approaching death."
SUPERIOR
MEMORIALS
ESTABLISHED
• OVER S9 YEARS
How could anyone
make these- things add
,up? Why did this young
girl face death when a 74 -
year -old relative lay
paralyzed in another
hospital, where she had
lain half dead, half alive,
for more than 20 years?
Could there be a God in
heaven who would permit
such things to happen?
And if so, does He rub
tragedy, to speak of a
God of love? Indeed, it
would not be possible - if
there had been no cross.
As the pastor drove
home from the hospital
that evening, he found the
words to comfort the
grief-stricken- mother.
The words are from the
Bible, in Romans 8: 31-
32: "Faced with all this,
what can we say? If God
His hands in ghoulish glee
as He snuffs out the lives
Of helpless children and
breaks the hearts of
pleading parents?
Is He a heartless
monster who, although
He has the power to
change the tragic destiny
of men, refuses to use
that power for man's
good?
Is it possible, in the
face of stark and bitter
is for us, who can be
against us? He did not
even' keep back His own
'Son; but offered Him for
us all! He gave us His Son
- will He not also freely
give us all things?"
(TEV)
There are so many
things in life we cannot
understand. But there is
one thing we CAN know.
Above us, ruling 'in the
heavens, is a -God who. is
FOR us. He is a God of
love, not of some kind of
love -in -general, but a God
who has demonstrated
His love for us in that
supreme act of sacrifice
on the cross. There, as
Isaac Watts has put it
"God, the mighty Maker,
died for man the
creature's sin."
The . Cross of Christ is
the one basis, the one
sure foundation for hope
in a world where there is
so -much uncertainty.
Indeed, it is the oniNsure
ground for ,hope that God
has given us. For it is
only in the Cross of Christ
that we can finally
become' convinced • of
God's mercy and His
love. There we meet God
in the flesh, willingly
offering Himself as the
sacrifice to pay for all
human self-love and self-
seeking, ,
The mountains and
seas may tell us of God's
power. The sun and moon
and the skies may tell us
of His wisdom'. The
microscope may tell us of
the marvelous secrets
which He has tucked
away in His, material
universe. But nowhere do
we .find the evidence of
God's Father -heart of
love except in the cross of
His beloved Son, Jesus
Christ. It is there that we
learn what God thinks of
us, how He feels toward
us, and what His in-
tentions toward us are.
The Cross and its
message .of divine love is
an endless store -house of
hope for every cir-
cumstance of life. The
Cross is God's eternal
"..get -well" card ad-
d? ed to all people. And
it fits all occasions.
Is business' bad? Is
employment hard to
find? Are the bills piling
high? Has 'a loved one
been in'hospital for weeks
or months? Are we far
from home and lonely?
Does the world seem to
pass us by? Have friends
begun to ignore. us? Is
there trouble in our
home, our marriage? Is
some sickness or
malignancy eating arour
body, and is death
coming closer?
There stands the Cross
of Christ with its
message: "God cares!
He didn't spare His Son,
but gave Him for you. He
is ready to give you all
the peace, comfort, help
and HOPE you'need."
