tour .
Twenty-five member's'
and friends of. the
Goderich Garden Club
met at the B1uew.ater
Centre fqr the
Developmentally Han-
'dicapped} on Wednesday
afternoon, February 21.
Here they were
welcomed by Mrs. Pat
Wheeler, Co-ordinator of
Volunteer Services.
Mrs. Wheeler ex-
plained that the Centre
was established in April
1976 by the Ministry of
Community and Social
Services to accommodate
people from Huron,
Perth, Grey and Bruce
who were in larger
centres at the time. These
people were moved to the
Bluewater Centre if they
originally came from this
area or now have families
living in one of these
counties.
At present there are 100
residents ranging in age
from 20 to 65 years.
Thirty per cent of these
residents have no family,
contact.
At the Centre, it, is the
purpose of the staff to
give proper treatment
and training in suitable
accommodation. The
Ministry agrees with the
Bluewater .Centre in
advocating normalism.
Residents are given
training suitable to the
area and to their abilities.
Residents are trained
in basic skills, • home
skills, community living,
woodworking, ceramics,
farming and care of
animals, greenhouse care
and Market gardening as
well as recreation.
At present, ten
residents work at the
barn where veal calves
and rabbits are raised
and sold live. On the
model farm, ponies,
calves,sheep, goats, and
fowl are kept.
Last summer was the
first summer they had a
market garden. Ten
residents worked. with a
4-11 Club volunteer and
sold produce at the same
prices as were charged in
the stores.
Other areas in which'
residents work are the
laundry, the kitchen, the
car wash, contract
assembly for Party Time
Company and in apple
orchards picking apples.
Every Friday is pay-
day and each week 10'
percent of their earnings
are banked so that each
has a reserve fund.
Getting '.out into the
community is very dif-
ficult. After preparation
through training in home
skills and community
living skills, some
residents are able to live
in group homes.
Each one is on trial for
one week in the home and
his or her bed at
Bluewater Centre is
saved for a period of
• three months. In 1978
there were fourteen
placements and only one
returned.
A group home was
recently established in
Goderich. There are,
several of these homes in
Exeter and Owen Sound.
Residents in the Centre
live in four housing units.
Each unit has its own
I¢ kitchen, diningroom,
livingroatp, and laundry.
Mrs. Wheeler stressed
the need of volunteer
helpers in several areas;
vocational • services,
activities department,
recreation department
and in the volunteer
n, association, also to help
in correspondence,
visitation and special
events. The volunteer
experiences op-
portunities for personal
growth and development
as well as a personal
sense of reward and
satisfaction gained from
service to others.
Miss Ivy Blay thanked
the staff of the Bluewater
Centre' on behalf of the
Garden Club and
presented a potted plant
to Mrs. Wheeler for the
Centre.
The next meeting of the
Garden Club will .be a
film night in the music
room of Robertson Public
School at 8 p.m. on March
21.
