Auxiliary learns about
Resusci-Anne aid
At their regular
meeting on February d9,
members of the Auxiliary
to Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital • became
better acquainted with
Resusci-Anne, a teaching
aid purchased by the
auxiliary for the hospital
in 1977.
Mrs. N. Jackson in-
troduced the guest
speaker, Gary Renaud.
Renaud, who is in charge
of all learning materials
in the hospital, is a
member of the Goderich
District Ambulance staff
and is also an instructor
with the St. John
Ambulance Brigade. -
The speaker demon-
strated the use of
Resusci-Anne, a training
' aid .which is used con-
stantly in regular
teaching sessions.
Resusci-Anne - is
especially useful in one of.
the most important areas
of instruction, namely
correct first aid treat- ,
ment for cardiac arrest.
When the heart stops
beating, it must be
pumped manually.
Practice on the Resusci-
Anne helps to give perfect
timing.
Renaud stressed the
importance of everyone
having training in first
aid. Six or seven courses
in first aid are given by
the St. John Ambulance
Brigade each year.
Several members,
under the direction of
Mrs. G.C. White and'Mrs.
C. Worsell, ;have been
busy moving all the stock
from the former gift shop
into the new larger
quarters. The stock will
be increased, .°and Mrs.
White would welcome
any suggestions 'about
improving -the stock;
' Mrs. R.W. Bell stressed
the importance of
keeping the shop staffed.
Mrs. C. Kalbfleisch will
act in her place as per-
sonnel convenor while
she is on vacation in
March.
Mrs. Worsell thanked
all knitters and • en-
couraged everyone to
complete knitting during
the winter months. Yarn
is available in the shop.
Mrs,, N. Jackson an-
nounced that two new
candy, stripers are being
oriented at present. The
annual awards will be
presented to Candy
Stripers on Sunday, April
29.
The president, Mrs. R.
McCallum, invited the
past president, Mrs. C.
Worsell, . to come for-
ward. Mrs. J. Berry •
presented Mrs. Worsell
with the past president's
pin and expressed the
thanks of the Auxiliary
for:: -r ---her excellent
leadership for more than
two years.
The next meeting will
be held on March 19 at 2
p.m.
Resi
Yvonne Solomon,
Brock Gadke, Rick
Freeman and Mike
Lietuvnikas represented
the Bluewater Centre in
the Seventh Annual
Winter Special Olympics
held at the University- of
Western Ontario on
Saturday, February 10.
These four young
people succeeded in being
the very best team to
-compete in the Special
Olympics and have just
been awarded the top
trophy, "The Spirit . of
Friendship".
Dr. Canny Milne, co-
chairman of events,
recalled in his opening
remarks how the Special
Olympics had been
developed by a group of
teachers and the public in
nts
order to provide op-
portunities for han-
dicapped children bet-
ween the ages of eight
and 21 to participate in
Olympic -like events.
Dr. Milne stated that
the competition aspect of
the Special Olympics, is
downplayedand par-
ticipation ' instead is
stressed.
The Friendship Trophy
is awarded on the basis of
several criteria which
include colourful dress,
friendship displayed,
percentage of events
entered and points won in
the various events.
Three hundred and
twenty-five young people
fr- -om Goderich,
Palmerston, Sarnia,
Windsor, Springfield,
West Lorne, St. Thomas
and other Ontario
communities travelled to
-
in tro
the Western campus to
participate individually
and as teams in
snowshoeing, tobogan-
ning, cross-country
sking, ice skating and
snow sculpturing.
Mike Lietuvnikas from
Bluewater Centre set new
Olympic speed records in
both snowshbeing and
cross-country skidg,
Each competitor was
proVided with a
chaperone. The physical
education department of
Western organized this
student involvement by
recruiting volunteers
from the many faculties -
physical education,
psychology, nursing,
medicine and the com-
munication disorders
,program.
The Bluewater Centre
team was accompanied
and trained by Tom
Worthington, Recreation
Direta'tor. The day's
events were also filmed
by Bluewater Cable TV
with Fred Salter of the
Bluewater Centre staff as
interviewer. This video
tape will soon be shown
on Channel 12.
