The Afternoon Auxiliary of the WMS of Knox Presbyterian Church met in the church parlour on February 21. Mrs. • G. Kaitting welcomed the. 34 Ladies present and opened the meeting with a , short article, "My, ,Creed,",, followed by the singing of the , hymn, "Singly Trusting Every Day", with Mrs. G. Henderson at the piano. Mrs. Kaitting led in prayer. During the business part of the meeting, the minutes of the January meeting were read by the secretary, Mrs. James Horton. The president an- nounced that several books had been sent for the use of the group by Mrs. Anne Leitch, a former member, now living in Toronto. A letter from Mrs. Leitch was read. Reports were given by the various secretaries, and the treasurer gave her report and announced the WMS allocation for 1979. , Programs for the year were given to the members. In September the auxiliary will celebrate its ninety-fifth an- niversary and plans will be made at a later date Don't forget the cow When selecting for fast growth rates, beef producers tend to con- centrate on the bull, and sometimes forget the .importance of the cow. Although the bull testing is important, it is also necessary to evaluate the cow, says Bob Murray, Livestock Branch, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. One way to 'identify` :productive cows is through herd evaluation, a free program offered by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, through the Record of Performance beef program. About producers are now enrolled in the herd evaluation program, says Murray. They find the information provided useful in culling and selection with the herd. "Some producers use the information to compare herd management 'systems or to record the progress of the herd." Participation in the herd evaluation program doesn't require much time. In .tally, producers `enter pedigree data on, forms available from local offices of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. When the forms are returned, the information is fed into a computer and a printed form is mailed to the producer__ Producers submit weaning weights of each calf. The weights are adjusted, by the com- puter, to 200 days' of age and age of the dam. If five or more calves are born within a 90 -day period, they are given an index and ranked for rate of gain from birth to weaning. .. Calves are reweighed at approximately one year of age. Using this information, the com- puter can adjust the weight to one year and give each calf another index. "The final summary, mailed to the producer, provides a breakdown of each sire's per- formance," says Murray. "It also includes items like calving difficulty and birth weight." "Cattle 'are traded on the basis of weight' so they should be selected on the same basis." The Record of ' Per- formance beef program also includes the group bull test program. For information about ROP .beef programs, contadt local offices of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and ]Food. 350 beef for this important oc- casion. A brief report was given of the annual meeting of Huron., Presbyterial held in Seaforth in;January. One of our members, Mrs. Robb McAllister, was elected president of the Presbyterial art this meeting. , Further plans were made for the Hamilton - London Synodical meeting to be held in Knox Church Goderich on April 10 and 11 and the co- operation of all members was requested, especially for billets for out-of-town delegates and help in supplying and serving food for meals and coffee breaks.
