(photo by Dave Sailors take two -game lead BY DAVE SYKES The Goderich Sailors quickly assumed com- mand of. their opening round series in Inter- mediate C playoff action,, winning two games last week. - The Sailors opened the best -of -seven series with a 9-1 victory over Wingham in Goderich Friday and then took a two -game lead with. a 4-2. win in Wingham, Sunday. The victories moves the Sailors into a two -game lead in the best -of -seven set with the third game scheduled for the Goderich Memorial Community Centre, Friday at 8.30 p.m. The Sailors jumped on a shorthanded Wingham squad in the first game scoring four goals in the first period, two in the second and added three in the final period. Dan Duncan and Murray Henderson led the Sailors nine -goal offence with two goals apiece. Henderson scored his first goal in the first period and scored the ninth Goderich goal late in the final period. Duncan scored' one goal in both the second and third period. Graham.- ,Hamilton, Paul Kelly, Ron Sowerby, Ken Meriam and Grant Shelton scored one goal apiece for the Sailors. Wingham's Tom Irwin ruined Yuergen Hellnian's shutout bid as he scored the, Royal's lone goal in the first minute of the ` second period. The Sailors relied on a third period rally in the second game as they scored three times in the final period to break a 1-1 tie and win 4-2. Scott Parks put the Sailors into a one -goal advantage in the first period scoring at 7.56 on a pass from Kevin Meriam. Wingham tied the score midway through the Peewee B's edge Woodstock The Pee Wee House League continued last Monday evening with Denomme Flowers defeating McGee Firebirds 3-0. Rob Dunn had the shut -out for Denomme Flowers while Brian Hanna scored all three goals with an assist by David Armstrong. Friday evening Clinton "B"s and Sproule Shoes played to a 2-2 tie in Goderich. Saturday morning Denomme Flowers and McGee Firebirds played a close -checking game with Denomme Flowers squeezing out a 2-1 win. Ken Huff and Brian Hanna scored one each for Denomme Flowers with assists from Tim Chisholm and Peter Conlon. The goal for McGee Firegirds was scored by Chris Starkey with an assist by Jamie Sturdy. Standings at the end of the regular Pee Wee House League schedule are: first, Denomme Flowers; second McGee Firebirds; third, Sproule Shoes and fourth, Clinton "B"s. The playoffs will Ste' the 'first and third teams playing against each other and the second and fourth. These will be twogametotal goal series. • The first game of the O.M.H.A. Pee Vee B series was played •1• Saturday afternoon before an enthusiastic crowd with Goderich Haylow Electrical outlasting Woodstock in a 5-4 win. The Haylow Electrical squad came out with great deter- mination and played fast and hard with some good back checking to lead Woodstock 5-1 at the end of the second period. When the teams took to the ice for the third period- Woodstock really played well and put three goals into the Goderich net in a four minute time span. Goderich was able to hold Woodstock off even though Woodstock had an extra man ad- vantage due to a Goderich penalty in the last couple of minutes, and they pulled their goalie. Scoring for Haylow Electrical was Brian Hanna two goals and an assist, Peter Conlon and Chris Starkey a goal and an assist each, and Mike Collins a goal and Ken Huff an assist. The Woodstock team had two goals and an assist from Rob Ladouceur, one ' goal each by Dave Goodall and Shawn Pow and an assist each from Dale McDougall and Paul Currie. Goderich Haylow Electrical were assessed six penalties and Woodstock five. The second game of this series will be played in Woodstock on Saturday, March third at 5:45 p.m. Good -luck Goderich! St. Marys win basketball crown The St. Marys boys basketball team won the Huron -Perth Separate School tournament on the weekend in Exeter. St. Marys won the championship with a 22- 17 win in the final over St. Michaels of Stratford, In reaching the final St. Marys defeated St. Patriers 32-14, Holy Name 38-18, St. Josephs 69-13 and St. Boniface 29- 15. °" seven schools par- ticipated in the tour- nament and played four games apiece. After the round robin section the top two team's played the final. Kettle Point responded with' two late second period goals to reduce the Merchant margin„to 4-2 after two periods of play. Ron Corriveau put the Merchants into a one -goal lead' with the only goal of the first period and John Hoy, Cam McDonald and Ron Whetstone added second period goals to boost the Merchants into a 4-0 lead. Kettle Point got back in the game with two goals before the close of the second period and without some fine goaltending by Doug Spitzig the visitors could have easily been in the Bantam B's win 2-1 Joey Morrissey scored with eight seconds left in over .time period, to beat New Hamburg 2-1 in New Hamburg on Feb. 24 for the Bantam B playoffs. The other Goderich goal was scored by Tom Profit. On Feb. 18 in Goderich the Goderich Paper Leafs fought to a 4-4 tie after 10r exciting minutes of overtime with a hat trick by Ron Stoddard and a goal by Brent riglier. On Feb. 25 the Goderich Paper Leafs beat New Hamburg 7-2 without standing play from the line of Joey Morrissey, Jim Young and Del Bedard. Goals were scored with Joey Morrissey with a hat trick, Jim Young with two goals and Ron Stoddart and Rob Kisch with one each. The Goderich team has had great goal tending from Doug Dickson and Paul McCartney. Also credit has to be given to coach Bill Martin for the improvement of this team. lead.
