The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-02-22, Page 30PAGE 14A—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1979 Meat ackers discusse problem Over 500 delegates to the 59th Annual Meeting of the Meat Packees Council of Canada held February 4-6 in Calgary heard several speakers stress the desirability of a free enterprise, com- petitive, market-oriented thrust for the 'livestock - meat system. Nutrition and car- diovascular disease and implications for the meat industry were reviewed in the technical session. The comments that follow summarize - some of the presentations. LESS MEAT IN • THE U.S. IN 1979 American consumers seem less worried about meat than many nutrition activists based on, the surge in meat demand in the U.S. Ewen Wilson of the American Meat Institute pointed out a three percent drop in total U.S. red meat output in 1978 pushed the con- sumer price index up 19 percent. Wilson indicated the U.S. hog story has been an astonishing one in the last two years. 'The favourable hog -cern ratio has not brought out much expansinn However, the latest survey is en- couraging for processors as the number of breeding sows • was up sharply. 'U.S: meat supplies are expected to decline in 1979. It is not anticipated that the rise in pork production will be suf- ficient to fully offset the drop ' in beef and veal production. Rising meat,' prices and pers'istent inflation in the U.S. economy :will contribute to fears of government intervention", according to Wilson. MARKETING BOARDS DEFENDED With earlier speakers condemning many of the actions of marketing -boards, the opening luncheon speaker Dr. J. G. O'Donoghue, Deputy Minister of Alberta Agriculture, rose to their defense when he said, "I readily support the principles and fully appreciate why they have come into being, The historical un- predictability of the marketplace, the failure of that market place to return costs of production and the problems of supply and demand are legitimate concerns and lead to sound objectives." Dr. O'Donoghue acknowledged that some problems do exist, such as quota values 'and restrictions on new en ° trants. However, he went on to express deep con- cern at the degree to which marketing boards are under attack by consumer groups, in- .. dustry and some government depart- ments. He went on to support public sbrutiny of any subject, indicating his faith in the majority opinion of an informed public. • GOVERNMENT ACTIONS CRITICIZED "The most serious fault and criticism cif gover- nment is that toooften in mid -stream, regulations and rules are changed which completely destroy good, logical production intentions of producers," Garnet Altwasser, General Manager, Lakeside Farm Industries told delegates. Altwasser pointed out the devalued Canadian dollar is one reason why we in Canada have the highest cattle prices in the world, but con- sidering the consumer situation, and the fact government -policy seems to be directed to cheap food, we must face the fact the industry could find itself an unwilling fine markets... of fine foods PRIDE OF CANADA OR SHAMROCK SLICED SIDE !,ACON LIMIT 4 PER CUSTOMER PLEASE !GI BURNS FULLY COOKED PORK SHOULDER SMOKED PICNIC OUR REG. 51.75 Ib.
