Jesus would lift your mind up
BY THE
REVEREND
A. C. YOUNG
Throughout the.
ministry of Jesus; by
precept and example, he
continually sought to
.direct the attention of his
hearers and followers to
God; to° lift their minds
above the material world
and its cares into the
calm'eternity of God.
In the New. Testament,
we read how his simplest
teachings in this regard
were futile in many
cases.
In St. Luke 12:13 one of
his hearers said:
"Master, speak to -my
brother, that he divide
the inheritance with me,"
to which Jesus replies:
"Man who made me a
judge or a divider over
you? Take heed and
beware of covetousness,
for a man's life consisteth
not in the abundance of
things which he
possesseth."
Then he spoke a
parable: "The ground of
a certain rich, man
brought forth plentifully:
and he thought within
himself, saying, What
position of pleasure
Ameimmismoi before God.
One writer likens our
present generation to a
shop into which some
mischief -maker has
entered unobserved and
has changed the price
label's around so that
cheap things are priced
high and valuable things
are priced lois.
A sad awakening
always follows when man
in need turns suddenly to
rely on his possessions
and finds that what he
thought was of great
value proves to be of little
worth, and what he has
disdained as worthless is
inistur:
shall I do, because I have
no room where to bestow
my fruits? And he said,
This will I do: I will pull
down my barns and build
greater: and there will I
bestow all my •frui,t,s and
my goods. And I will say
to my soul, Soul, thou
hast much goods laid up
for many years; take
thine ease, eat, drink, and
be merry. But God said
unto him, Thou fool, this
night thy soul shall he
required of thee: then
whose shall those things
be, which thou hast
provided? So is he that
layeth up treasure for
himself, and is not rich
toward God."
Jesus at all times
sought to help men to
help them see and believe
in things most worthwhile
to the end that they might
find security, and he
encouraged his hearers to.
"seek first the kingdom
of God."
Regardless of His
teaching and His
sacrifice, man has tended
to disregard and ignore
this teaching to put first
things first and things
have become confused
that man isn't sure which
things really are first.
Some put service to
man first. Others set up
idols in the form of
power, wealth, education,
of inestimable worth.
On the other hand, I can
think -of many who have
found the secret of true
living. When the hour of
crisis`came and troubles
and agony befell them,
they were serene, even
jovial for they had within
them that which, was true
gold,
Herein lies the true
mission of the Christian
church. It has a glorious
opportunity to share in
this true mission at home
and overseas. The
primary mission of God
and of His Son, Jesus
Christ Whom He sent to
redeem needy man.
