The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-02-22, Page 24• PAGE 8A—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 22, 1979 Newly renovated office opened Credit union BY•JOANNE BUCHANAN The Goderich Com- munity Credit Union has come a long way in 25 years. Its first annual report in 1954 disclosed assets of $1,439.75 and a total membership of 51. Its 25th annual report in November of 1978 showed assets of $3,472,290 and a total membership of 2270. On Thursday, February 15 at 11.30 a.m.,' Goderich's Credit Union held the official opening -of its newly renovated building at 39 St. David Street. The space in the building has been doubled. Because of its - t-'e-nendous growth in business, ` the building before renovations was simply not large enough. The renovations began on November 20 and took about three weeks. to complete. The Credit Union was able to stay open for business during this period as only half of the building was done at one time. The whole inside of the building was gutted and a cement block wall torn out of the middle. New panneling, carpets and facing on the tellers' wickets will greet you now- when you' enter the building. • The original Credit Union in Goderich• was St. Peter's-, Roman Catholic Church with Les Pitblado as president. •-- Many residents of Goderich, who were not members of St. Peter's Church, were interested in '-th'e cre ri't ilnibil movement and therefore, a meeting was arranged by Mr. Pitblado with these residents., many of whom whom worked at Dominion . Road Machinery Company Limited. With the help of the Iate Vic Roy, manager of the Clinton Community Credit Union, an ap- plication for charter was signed by the applicants in the British Exchange Hotel, wiich has since been destroyed by fire, and --a charter for the Goderich Community Credit Union Limited was received from the Provincial Secretary of Ontario dated June 29, 1954. , St. Peter's Credit Union amalgamated with the Community Credit Union and the first office of the Community Credit Union was located on East Street. Charles Woods was treasurer and Les Pitblado and George Hamilton were appointed to the Credit Committee. The second office was located on Hamilton Street and .-.Stephen Helesic was appointed Treasurer -Manager. The third office was located at the back of the Bedford Hotel on South Street, but business was. growing fast enough then to warrant the Credit Union purchasing its own building at 39 St. David Street in 1962. The founder's pin was presented to Les Pitblado at the annual meeting -of the Credit Union in November, 1966, for his , many years of service. Credit Union manager, Lee Kirkwood, explains' the workings of the Credit Union by describing each member of it as a shareholder. Dividends are set and approved at the annual meetings of members. Policy is set by the Board of Directors. Directors are elected by the members. Besides the Board of Directors, there is a Credit Committee, a Supervisory - or Examining Committee and a Treasurer (the Drily elected officer who can be paid). Lm Although there is a League Central which gives service to all Credit Unions, each Credit Union is independent. The Goderich Com- munity Credit Union is rtin by those members or shareholders in the community and all the profits go back to these members. The purpose of the Credit ' Union is to promote thrift among its members, to help them and thusenjoy a greater portion of prosperity and happiness in life. A . No one else can save in it, borrow from it or -vote in its elections. It's for members only. You are not just a customer at the Credit Union but an owner. During 1978, The Goderich - Community Credit Union's Credit Committee, consisting of Les Riley, Les Pitblado and Norris McEwen, held 50 meetings to approve 497 loans in the amount of $1,491,421.
