Newly renovated office opened
Credit union
BY•JOANNE
BUCHANAN
The Goderich Com-
munity Credit Union has
come a long way in 25
years.
Its first annual report
in 1954 disclosed assets of
$1,439.75 and a total
membership of 51. Its
25th annual report in
November of 1978 showed
assets of $3,472,290 and a
total membership of 2270.
On Thursday,
February 15 at 11.30
a.m.,' Goderich's Credit
Union held the official
opening -of its newly
renovated building at 39
St. David Street.
The space in the
building has been
doubled. Because of its
- t-'e-nendous growth in
business, ` the building
before renovations was
simply not large enough.
The renovations began
on November 20 and took
about three weeks. to
complete. The Credit
Union was able to stay
open for business during
this period as only half of
the building was done at
one time.
The whole inside of the
building was gutted and a
cement block wall torn
out of the middle. New
panneling, carpets and
facing on the tellers'
wickets will greet you
now- when you' enter the
building. •
The original Credit
Union in Goderich• was
St. Peter's-, Roman
Catholic Church with Les
Pitblado as president. •--
Many residents of
Goderich, who were not
members of St. Peter's
Church, were interested
in '-th'e cre ri't ilnibil
movement and therefore,
a meeting was arranged
by Mr. Pitblado with
these residents., many of
whom
whom worked at
Dominion . Road
Machinery Company
Limited.
With the help of the Iate
Vic Roy, manager of the
Clinton Community
Credit Union, an ap-
plication for charter was
signed by the applicants
in the British Exchange
Hotel, wiich has since
been destroyed by fire,
and --a charter for the
Goderich Community
Credit Union Limited was
received from the
Provincial Secretary of
Ontario dated June 29,
1954. ,
St. Peter's Credit Union
amalgamated with the
Community Credit Union
and the first office of the
Community Credit Union
was located on East
Street. Charles Woods
was treasurer and Les
Pitblado and George
Hamilton were appointed
to the Credit Committee.
The second office was
located on Hamilton
Street and .-.Stephen
Helesic was appointed
Treasurer -Manager.
The third office was
located at the back of the
Bedford Hotel on South
Street, but business was.
growing fast enough then
to warrant the Credit
Union purchasing its own
building at 39 St. David
Street in 1962.
The founder's pin was
presented to Les Pitblado
at the annual meeting -of
the Credit Union in
November, 1966, for his
, many years of service.
Credit Union manager,
Lee Kirkwood, explains'
the workings of the Credit

residing or working in the
Goderich area, and you
must open an account,
depositing a minimum of
$5. Once you are a
member, you are always
a member. You may
cancel your membership
at any time by with-
drawing all shares:
Each member or
shareholder has a vote at
the annual meeting
(regardless of the
number of shares held)
and therefore has a say or
de-moerat i e- control-- in- the
operations of the Credit
Union. Dividends are set
and approved at the
annual meetings of
members. Policy is set by
the Board of Directors.
Directors are elected by
the members.
Besides the Board of
Directors,there is a
Credit Committee, a
Supervisory - or
Examining Committee
and a Treasurer (the Drily
elected officer who can be
paid). Lm
Although there is a
League Central which
gives service to all Credit
Unions, each Credit
Union is independent.
The Goderich Com-
munity Credit Union is
rtin by those members or
shareholders in the
community and all the
profits go back to these
members.
The purpose of the
Credit ' Union is to
promote thrift among its
members, to help them
and thusenjoy a greater
portion of prosperity and
happiness in life.
A . Credit Union,
basicallyjhen, is a group
of people who agree to
save together and lend
each other money at a
reasonable interest rate.
It is a legal 'corporation,
chartered under the law
as a non-profit
organization , to serve
members , only. A
member owns and
operates the Credit Union
for his own benefit. No
one else can save in it,
borrow from it or -vote in
its elections. It's for
members only.
You are not just a
customer at the Credit
Union but an owner.
During 1978, The
Goderich - Community
Credit Union's Credit
Committee, consisting of
Les Riley, Les Pitblado
and Norris McEwen, held
50 meetings to approve
497 loans in the amount of
$1,491,421. There were
also 35 applications
rin
rejected for various
reasons.
Yes • the Goderich
Community Credit Union
has come a long way over
tie years.. Under the
heading o.f "A Few
Highlights of Past Annual
Meetings", perhaps the
Credit Union's growth' in
Goderich can best be
described. From 1955
highlights when not

to ether savin
enough people were
present at the annual
meeting to make a
quorum, it .goes to 1972
highlights when the.
Credit Union's assets had
reached over $1,000,000.
-and a draw was made at
the annual meeting for
one day's interest on that
amount.
More than eight million
Canadians belong to 3.881
Credit Unions stretching
from 't -ie Yukon,. to
Newfoundland. Canada's
Credit Unions have assets
of nearly $16 billion.
• Canada's Credit U.nion
movement has been
going strong since 1900
when Alphonse
Desjardi•ns of Levis,
Quebec, started it all. He
was followed by groups of
other people with com-
people
mon bonds' -who saved
, their money together and
made low-cost loans to.
one another from their
pooled savings.
If you are so inclined,
drop into .Goderich's
Community Credit Union
sometime to see the
building's new
renovations, ask any
questions you might have
about the workings of
Credit Unions and
discover why Goderich's
Credit Union is a credit to
the town.
