BY JOANNE BSJCHANAN There's a well-known folk song that asks, "Where have all the flowers gone?" Well, in Goderich .we might ask, "Where have all the barbers gone?" While there are a handful of barbers in Goderich now, Arnold McConnell who has lived here since 1927, can remember when there were no less than 12 barbers in town all operating out of shops on the Square or within a block of the Sgaure. An article which Mr. McConnell read in the London Free Press recently about a barber who was retiring in Wbodstock after many years in the profession, set him to thinking of the time when Goderich's barbers were in • their prime. Each one had a distinctive personality and special drawing cards which attracted certain clientele. • There was Fred Toole who had a shop on West Street. Then there was Joe - Mutch,,who had a shop on the Square near the present day Gerrard's store. He belonged to the Goderich Fire. Depart- ment and when the fire alarm sounded, he would rush off to the station leaving his customer in • the chair. If you wanted to hear the latest news about .a certain fire or the department itself, Joe Mutch's shop was the place to go to for a hair cut. And you didn't sit in Joe's window sill while waiting your turn. He didn't like that and he had a bar installed on the sill which would • give customers an electrical shock if they sat on it. George Little had a shop in the block where the Woolworth's store is now. He had an orchestra and in between hair cuts, he and some of the boys would rehearse for dances in one of the back rooms.
