The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-02-22, Page 11Sports age Jr. Vikings remain undefeated BYTD The GDCI junior_ Vikings improved their unbeaten record in Huron -Perth basketball action here Friday with a close 52-48 win over the Stratford Central Ramblers. The win kept the Vikings in first place in the league standings and a win today (Thur- sday) against Stratford Northwestern in Strat- ford would secure the home -court advantage for the Vikings in -the upcoming playoffs. Jim Costello led the Vikings with 26 points. Phil Aubin added 13. Steve Gallow contributed six points, Mike Wedlock hit for four and Dennis Aubin got three. For Stratford, Mark Van Den Ven had 17. Lothar Muellar and Jeff DeLaplanque added 10 each. The Vikings led by a 29- 23 score at half-time in the well -played game. The junior Vikings victory, along with those by the senior and midget teams gave the GDCI teams a clean -sweep of the triple -header over the top-rated Central teams. Midgets battle Stratford for first BYTD The GDCI midgets won • their eighth consecutive Huron -Perth Conference basketball game' here Friday night when they defeated Stratford Central, 72-54. The Vikings' strong team effort offensively and defensively, com- bined with excellent rebounding, won it for them. .The _.game,...... which. saw' the,: 'GDCI team ahead 34-27 at halftime, was close until the fourth quarter when the Vikings pulled away. Rob Plunkett had his highest' offensive output of the season in leading the Viking scoring with 18 points. He also had six steals and seven rebounds. Joey Morrissey also had his best game offensively with 15 points and had eight steals and five rebounds to his credit. Chris Pitre had 10 points and was the big rebounder for the Vikings,hauling in , 12 rebounds on the defensive boards. His efforts there were an important factor since ,, Stratford had a height advantage over the Vikings who were playing without their top rebounder,Kevin Adams. Ben Melick also had 10 points for the Vikings. _Colin Alexander had eight, while John Leddy and Jim MacDonald had four points each. Karl Krohmer rounded out the Vikings' scoring with three points. Paul Kjaer had 19 points for Stratford and Mike Schlotzhauer added 12. The Vikings finish off their regular schedule today (Thursday) against also undefeated Nor- thwestern in a battle for first place in the final standings. .Eager Beavers_ lead Forester play First place Eager Beavers with 31, shutout Jack's Turtles with the help of Kevin Rumig's 294 and- 773. triple. Ninth place Jack's Turtles with 13 points had high games rolled by Jack Gilbert 241, and Ted Johnston a 608 triple. Jokers, in second place with 26 points, gained two points with Eric Miller hitting a 276 and 708 triple. Tied for seventh place, Riots with 18 had Rose Rising grabbing a 229 and 615 triple to help them get five points. Leone Thom hit a 231 and 645 triple for third place Party Case to help them take three points for , a total of 25. Fifth place Easy Rollers took four points for a total of 23 with Glenn Lamb rolling a 240 and 632 triple. Nancy Willis rolled a 250 and 690 triple for fourth place Six Pack to help them grab three for a total of 24 points. In Betweens, tied for seventh with 18, had Mary Bisset hitting. a 233 and George Robison a 671 triple. Sixth place Odd Couples grabbed five for a total of 21 points with high games by Dave Sowerby - 276 and 612 triple. Last place Sexy Six with 11 had Vi Fuller rolling a 235 and Doug Fuller a 590 triple. ( photo by Joanne Buchanan ) Suns tune up .for playoff For the last two weekends, the Suncoast. Suns participated in the Lucan Atom Tournament while waiting for the league playoffs to begin. Last Sunday, Ingersoll defeated the Suns 6-3 to win the consolation' championship. After a scoreless first period, Ingersoll notched two powerplay goals but Steve Schutz scored from Kevin Talbot to make the game tight again. Before the period ended, Ingersoll scored their third powerplay goal to lead 3-1 after two periods. The cruncher came within the first three minutes of the third by scoring two 'fast goals to make it 5-1, Mid -way through the' third, the Suns got two fast ones of their own, Dave Jewell. unassisted and Scott Garrow from Jewell and Ron Chapman. Ingersoll put the game on ice with a goal at the end of the period. The Suns were put into the consolation round by the tournament champs Strathroy on a 4-0 tune. Goderich kept alive in the tournament by defeating Oakridge Acres 4-1. Steve Schutz scored unassisted to give the Suns a short- lived lead as Oakridge came back one minute in the second period to tie the score. But Dave Jewell notched three consecutive goals for the win. GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1979—PAGE II Listowel defeats Goderich girls BY LESLIE KING Three games of Ringette were played' Sunday morning starting at 10:00- o'clock in the Goderich Arena between the Goderich senior and junior girls and three teams from Listowel. The juniors played twice against Listowel.; 'and were defeated in the ' first game 9-4and 7-3ii1 the second. The Goderich girls are showing a great improvement in their game (both senior and junior levels) even though they lost to Listowel. However, it ,must be remembered that this is their first season playing Ringette and they have improved each and every game. Laurie Long scored five times for Listowel followed by Maureen Basler with three and Valerie Helmka, one. The leading scorer for Goderich was Cheryl Smith with two goals assisted by Kathleen Carter and one unassisted, and Lisa Kish one, assisted by Debbie Mitchelmore, There were four penalties assessed in the game. The second game was played against a different junior team from Listowel and Goderich played exceptionally well. Scorers for Goderich were: Mary Michele Morrisey, assisted by Tammy Gibbons; Tammy Gib - Maitland Club busy with curling activity The Maitland is . bur- sting with activity, curlers can't ' go south, they just don't have the time. The ladies curling section held a jitney Wednesday, February 14. Nancy MacLennan and Kay King are credited for a great everting and the prizes surpassed most bonspiels. Winners in the jitney - First, Doris Paquette, skip; with Lois Vanstone, vice; Janet Warrilow, 2nd and June Bugler lead. Secondplace was won by Nncy Nephew's team with Chris ,Turner, _vice; Pat Jewell, second and Elaine Bois, lead. Prizes were also given out for the winning teams in the Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday night draws. First draw Tuesday afternoon went to Phyl Durst's team with Lois Vanstone and Linda Bruinsma. The Wed- nesday night winning team in the first draw was skipped by Bernice Moore with . Kay King, vice; Monica Page, 2nd and Susan White, lead, Second draw winners on Tuesday afternoon were Mary Ann Dempsey, skip; Kay King, vice and Lynn Todgham 2nd. Wednesday night was won by Doris Paquette with Ann Kuran vice, Lynn Todgham 2nd, and t.iiida Hansen lead. Gayle McCaul, head of ways and means, sold tickets on door prizesand the winners were Joan Grace, June Bugler, Ann Kuran and Chris. Turner. Mary Ann Dempsey was the high scorer in Court Whist. Chris Hoffineyer most kindly offered her home and ski trails to our energetic 'female members and we do have a good number. President Shelagh Sully led the pack around the ski trails. Carol Hunter- provided a delicious supper_ and_.__Ardithe..._ 'supervised an evening of cards. The intermediate O.C.A. Division -13 competition was held at our club this weekend. The senior girls were 'soundly trounced : by Listowel but credit must be given for sheer grit and determination right to the bitter end; Michelle Boyce, in goal, was kept busy and made many outstanding saves against a relentless Listowel team.
