The Steelers battled Hanover to a third and deciding game after a thrilling 4-2 home ice win but were easily defeated in the final game 8-3, The bantams won their first round series defeating Port Elgin in three games. They lost the first game of that • series but rebounded with two straight 6-0 victories. The first game will be at the Goderich Memorial Community—:Cen-tre, Friday beginning at 8.30 p.rn. The Sailors had little difficulty in disposing of Lucknow, Friday as they piled up a 6-1 advantage after two periods of play en rout to the 7-3 win. Pee Wee "B" schedule was played last 'Monday evening with Goderich Haylow Electrical defeating Listowel Cyclones 5-3 in the first of a best -of three series. It was a very exciting, fast moving game as Mike Collins and' Peter Conlon were two goal scorers for - Haylow Electrical with Chris Starkey scoring .a single goal. Doug Lounsbury, Dave Armstrong, Ken Huff and Brian Hanna added assists. • Listowel's. Paul Stewart scored two, with Terry Dietrich the single and an assist. Mike Zimmer and Mark Hofstee had an assist each. The Listowel goalie Malcolm • Burrowes showed great speed with . his glove hand and played the full game. Rob Dunn was in goal for the first and third periods for Goderich while Dave McCallum play the second. The . second game of this series was played in Listowel on. Saturday with Listowel Cyclones defeating Goderich Haylow Electrical 3-2. Malcolm Burrowes- played another out- standing game in goal for `Listowel as Goderich hammered him with shots but getting Only two by him. A single by. Terry Dietrich assisted by Paul Stewart opened the scoring for thee -Cyclones in the first period. Peter Conlon assisted by Ken Huff scored the first goal for Goderich. Near the end of the first period Chris Starkey scored assisted by Brian Hanna giving Goderich a 2-1 lead. Listowel came back in the second and . third periods with one goal in each scored by Paul Stewart and assisted on both by Mark Hofstee. Sunday evening saw the third and final game • Trail members go. tobogganning The Maitland Trail event of last Friday was a challenge to the hardy. Hour by hour during the day, weather reports spoke of record col -d temperatures of minus 30C. Regardless, 12 Maitland Trail members were not to be done out of a novel evening,'s fun. Bundled up in many layers of various hues, the members arrived at Heinz and Wendy Hoernig's home on Benmil'ler Heights. Assorted long and short' toboggans ready, they headed for the hill. The sky seemed ablaze with stars, clearer and brighter than ever. Novices being given.a few instructions, they shoved off into the darkness. A large snow hump part way down provided an exciting jump effect and by the bottom, all were relieved that they had managed to steer or be steered on the right path. The upward climb soon warmed everything but noses. Inside members were warmly received by • a blazing fire, so welcome! Hot spiced wine, goodies and conversation cheered the top of their small 'Winter triumph. The next outing will be on Sunday, February 25 at 1 p.m. It will be a river ski, Auburn to Wawanosh Conservation Area, approximately three miles. Meet at Auburn Bridge. of this series played in Goderich with the Goderich Haylow Electrical pulling off a 2-1 win' in the first overtime period to take the series. Listowel opened the scoring just five minutes into the first period when Terry Deitrich scored on an assist by Paul Stewart. The Cyclones were able to hold Goderich off until the last two minutes of the third period when Tim Reihl assisted by Chris Starkey was able to get one by the Listowel goalie. The overtime period was a 10 minute stop time period and about four minutes into the period Peter Conlon assisted by Tim Chisholm scored what turned out to be the winning goal for Haylow Electrical. This three games series was well played and any of you who were at the games know these young atheletes played their hearts out. The next series is to be played against Wood- stock with the first game in Goderich on Saturday February 24 at 5:00 p.m., .,co.me on out and watch a great' bunch of young fellows play a terrific game of hockey. Ross Forester scored midway through the period to tie the score for Lucknwo. •Goder-ich----darn tnated the second period and goals by Paul Rau, Dan Colquhoun, Pul Kelly, Ken • Meriam and Rick Fremlin powered the Sailors to a 6-1 lead. Wayne Rau scored the seventh Goderich`goal in the final period while Ian Montgomery and Dave Black countered for Lucknow. ' `' The roof fell in on the Sailors in the second period Saturday as Wellesley scored six goals in the middle period to dump Goderich 8-3. Wellesley held a 2-0 lead after the first period of play but their six -goal outburst in ` the second period put the game away. Wellesley had built up a 6-0 in the second period before Scott Parks got the Goderich offence moving with a power play goal. Trailing 8-1 after two periods the Sailors managed two third period goals to make the score more respectable. Rick Fremlin scored at 18.14 and Dan Duncan added the final - Sailors goal midway through , the period. • The Sailors now begin the playoffs •against Wingham. The two divisions.' in the league will not play against each other but the division winners will playagainst other league winners'. game of the series winning 10-1 in Hanover last Wednesday. But the Steelers got right back in the series with a 4-2 win in Goderich, Thursday to force the third and eciding game. The Steelers held a 1-0 edge after one period of play in that game and Hanover tied the score with' the only goal of the second period. Goderich then outscored Hanover 3-1 in the final period. Goderich goaltender, Jim MacDonald, played a major role in the Steelers win, making several outstanding saves especially in the opening period with his team playing two men short. Brad Armstrong scored the first Goderich goal as he banged a loose puck into an empty net on a scrambly play. Hanover tied the score ona second period goal by Steve Swanson \ but Goderich controlled play in the final period and two goals by Armstrong, to com- plete his hat trick, and a single by Darrell Graham clinched the win. Hanover took control of the final game right from the start piling up a 4-0 first period lead and coasting to an 8-3 win in Hanover. Hanover scored after just 24 seconds in the third game and held a 5-0 lead in the second period before Goderich finally put one in the net. Dennis Kerr scored the second period goal fpr Goderich while Colin Alexander and Brad Armstrong added third period markers. Jeff Speer led the Hanover attack with four goals, three of them coming in the second period. .The bantams will-. be participating in a 'tour- nament in Harriston during the March break. Skaters pass tests A test day for figure skaters was held February 10 in Mildmay. • In the Senior Bronze Dances, the Fox Trot was passed by Lisa,Varga. Of the Senior Silver Dances, Tracey MacEwen passed the Starlight. A test day was also held in' Listowel on February 18. In the Preliminary Dances, Buffy Cook passed the Canasta. Debbie Horton passed her Second Figures. A test day was held on February 18 in Blyth. In the Preliminary Dances, the Canasta was passed by Louise Baechler and the Swing by Lisa Fisher. Of the Junior Bronze Dances, the Ten Fox and Fiesta was passed by, Jennifer Huyck. The First Figure was passed by Melaine Jeffrey.
