Mid:ets dispose of Listowel
The Goderich Green
and Parent Midgets won
the WOAA "BB" hockey
championship here
Monday night with a 9-4
victory over the Listowel
Cyclones. The victory
gave Goderich the best -
of -three final series two
' games to one. They will
now advance into the
OMHA playoffs against
Strathroy. The first game
in that series was played
here last night (Wed-
nesday) at 7 p.m.
Although other dates
were not set yet, a third
game, if needed, would
likely be here Saturday at
8 p.rn.
The Goderich team had
to come from behind to
win the series with the
stubborn Listowel team.
Listowel won the first
game at the series here
last Saturday by a 4-2
score and had the
Goderich team down 3-1
on their own ice Sunday
before the Green and
Parent squad came back
for a 5-3 win and forced
the deciding game here
Monday.

GMHA needs Parent support
The nagging problem of
volunteer help is chipping
away at the executive
structure of minor
hockey, posing a great
threat to the association
for next year.
" If parent involvement
doesn't improve," GMHA
president Bill Brown
said. " Minor hockey is in
big trouble."
The concern of the
minor hockey executive
stems from a•. general
meeting that was at-
tended by five people,
three coaches and two
parents, as well
executive members.
Three executive mcm-
hers have agreed to stay
on for an additional term
and the association would
like..to fill the vacated
posts before the end of the
current season.

qualified people who are
prepared to give some

The G.D.C.1. wrestling
team emerged as'Huron-
Perth champions in the
Conference finals in St.
Marys Friday.
The championship
came as a surprise to
coaches Ray Donnelly
and Bob Dick. This year's
Viking wrestling team ,,is
a young team which will
lose only one or two
wrestlers through
graduation.
Goderich wrestlers wort
just four of 15 individual
titles but team points
awarded for matches and
for pit ning oppponents
gave the Vikings their
winning. point total.
Fourteen of the sixteen
Viking wrestlers com-
peting contributed points
to the team total of 133
points.
St. Marys was second
with 108, South Huron had
105, Stratford Nor-
thwestern 92, Stratford
Central 89 and Listowel
34.
The top four finishers in
each weight category
advance to the WOSSA

the Vikings were Brian

GMHA has called
another meeting for
March 13 hoping to at-
tract more interested
volunteers and elect an
executive for the 1979-80
hockey season.
The hockey season has
also been marred by
charges of parent
harassment of team
coaches and referees.
GMHA secretary,
Eleanor Parent
reiterated Brown's
concern 'adding that if
people weren't willing to
get involved " the boys
will be playing in the
street next winter."
Another major concern
of the association is the
lack of qualified referees
in Goderich. The
refereeing workload is
being handled by a
handful of young referees
without•,the direction of a
referee in chief.
Richard Brenner
assumed the • role of
referee -in -chief this
season to fill the void but
help is' still required in
that department.
" I won't put in 40 hours
a week for nothing,"
Brown' commented. " It
takes a complete effort."

deciding game. Last
Thursday the Green and
Parent team defeated
Hanover 9-2 to take the
best -of -three semi-final
two games to one.
Goderich had won the
first game in that series
16-2 but Hanover
squeaked out an 8-7
overtime win in Hanover
to force a third game.
In that third game,
Goderich got two goal
performances from
Larry Gaynor and Mike
Hodges. Don Elliott, Jim
Costello, Dan Maillet,
Larry Madge and Larry
Boyce got singles. Joel
Klassen got both Hanover
goals.
A well -rested Listowel
team got the jump on the
G' & P men in the first
game of the finals,
scoring two unanswered
goals late in the game to
break a 2-2 tie and win the
game 4-2.
Rob Trebish got the
game's first goal for
Goderich but goals by
John Stone and Jamie
Stone put Listowel in
front. Larry Madge's
goal tied it up, but goals
by Marc Hodgkinson and
Brian McMurren gave
the Cyclones their
margin of victory.
In game two in Listowel
Sunday, Larry Madge
made sure the Goderich
midgets would not be
eliminated, scoring four
of the five Goderich goals
in his team's come -from -
behind 5-3 victory. Dan
Maillet scored the other
Goderich goal.
Jeff Dude, with a pair,
and Marc Hodgkinson,
with one, were the
Listowel marksmen.
Listowel led 2-1 after
the first period, and
upped their lead to 3-1 in
the second only to see
Goderich turn the game
around by scoring four
unanswered goals to even
the series.
Goderich got off to a
fast start here Monday in
the deciding game with
five first period goals.
They had a 3-0 lead before
Listowel scored and
looked like they might
win easily but the
Listowel team refused to
quit. It was 5-2 for
Goderich after the first
period but Listowel came
back to outscore
Goderich 2-1 in the second
period and cut the
Goderich lead to 6-4.
However, Goderich took
control of the game in the
third period scoring three
unanswered goals to win
9-4.
Team captain Larry
Madge was again a
dominant factor in the
scoring with three goals
and three assists for
Goderich. Dan Maillet
had two goals and three
assists. Single goals were
scored by Don Elliott,
Jim Costello, Rob
Trebish and Mike
Hodges.
Jeff Dude, Bob
Graham, Steve Horn and
•John Stone were the
Listowel goal scorers.
Goderich coach Bill
Fritzley was pleased with
the play of his team in the
Listowel series but
Goderich team officials
were not happy about the
fact that no league of-
ficial from the WOAA
was in attendance to
present a trophy to the
Goderich team for
winning the WOAA "BB"
midget championship.
Friday night when the
Hanover Pee Wees won
the championship here by
defeating the Goderich-
Pee Wees, a trophy
presentation occurred.

Hanover dumps Lions to
win WOAA championship
The Goderich Lions
Pee Wees lost the WOAA
"BB" finals to Hanover
last week in two straight
games. Hanover won the
best -of -three series with
victories by scores of 3-1
at home Tuesday and 4-2
here Friday night.
Hanover now advances to
the OMHA playoffs as the
WOAA representative.
Hanover reached the
WOAA finals by defeating
Kincardine in one semi-
final while the' Lions got
there by eliminating Port
Elgin in the other semi-
final.
-Both games in the final
series produced hard -
skating, playoff hockey.
In the first game, the
Lions grabbed a 1-0 lead
on a goal by Todd

Daryl Madge, midway •
through the first period.
That lead stood up until

marker with bko,minutes
left in the game.
In ,Goderic.h Friday
night, the teams traded
first period goals with
Neil Pegelo scoring for
Hanover and John
Thompson scoring for
Goderich on a pass from
David Day.
Hanover got the only
goal of the second period
off the stick of Brent
Long.
Two third period goals
by Chris Ahrens and
Chris Ross boosted
Hanover into a 4-1 lead
before David Day not-
ched the Lions second
goal, assisted by John
Thompson and Paul
Brenner.
The series was a
cleanly played affair with
each team receiving a
total of only three minor
penalties in the two
games.
T.innr coach Dick
Madge was happy with
his team's play against
Hanover and felt the
Lions had played up to
their potential: Hanover
had to edge in size and
strength which the Lions
were unable to overcome,
but with eight returnees
for next season Madge
feels the Lions should be
strong, contenders next
year.
The Lions next goal for
this season is to prepare
themselves for the
Goderich Young Canada
week tournament in the
March break.
Listowel protests midget
BY DAVE SYKES
The Goderich midget
Bs carried a one -game
lead into the third game
of their series against
Listowel, Wednesday.
Goderich had' won the
first two games of the
best -of -five series, 4-2
Thursday and 8-1
Saturday, but the second
game was protested by
Listowel.
Listowel protested on
the grounds that a referee
used in the game here,
was not carded for
playoff work. Goderich
will also protest the fact
that Listowel did not have
a certified coach behind
the bench for the game:
Despite "the fact that
Goderich won two games
of the series, it wil'r
continue on the premise
that the midget Bs have
won only one game. The
second game is not of-
ficial until a ruling is
made on the protests.
Last Thursday,
Goderich broke opena 1-1
tie after the second
period with three third
period goals en rout to the
4.2 victory. Listowel had
pulled into a one -goal
lead in the second period
before Jeff Denomme
tied the score midway
through the period.
Goderich then got two
third period goals from
Steve Sager and a single
by John Huff to• claim a
one -game lead in the
series.
Goderich was an easy
winner in the second
contest, scoring three
goals in the first and third
periods and adding two in
the second for the 4-1
victory. "
Jim Fritzley and Willie
Denomme led 'the
God"erich offence with
two goals apiece. Steve
Sager, Dean Bowra, John
Huff and John Alexander
scored one goal,each.
The third game of the
series was played in
Listowel Wednesday
night and the fourth game
Will be played in the
Goderich Memorial
Community Centre
Thursday .(tonight)
beginning at 8.30 p.m.

waiting for an opponent
in OMHA playoffs.
The Stars will play the
winner of the, Amher-

Strathroy ran into
goaltending difficulties
as their regular goalie

ineligible to play because
ale has not been a resident

So Strathroy official;s
