time before preparipg The coynsellors keep
supper. They have a d the residents updated
rotating schedule for
cooking and cleaning
during the week and a
housework schedule for
Saturdays.
The res -idents are on an
individual program plan.
That is, shortly after each
resident arrives at the
Home, the counsellors
and any others involved
with that resident, sit
down and draw up a list of
goals for him or her and
then under the individual
service plan they also
decide which teaching
skills will be used to be
the most effective. These
plans are required under
the Homes for Retarded
Persons Act. They allow
flexibility.
The counsellors test the
residents once a week by
taking them through a
check list of various
tasks. This helps the
counsellors assess each
resident's most im-
portant needs. During the
week, the residents
practise the tasks , in
which they are the'
weakest.
Each day the residents
do three . minutes of
exercise to a musical
routine. They also do
about what is,,go.ing on in
the corn munityvbecause
they can't read to keep
themselves updated.
Once they know about
events, they •are -quite
willing to become socially
involved. Some of them
bowl, some play
basketball and some take
disco dance lessons.
Sometimes they will go
out to dinner or to a
dance. It is hoped that the
Group Home will soon
have a van so the
residents can particpate
in even more sports
activities and outings.
There are rules and
regulations at the Group
Home so the residents
know' where they stand.
And there are some
unique teaching methods
which are being
developed for the
residents by the coun-
sellors who meet once a
week for this purpose.
For instance, scrap
books containing pictures
of food are used, helping
the residents associate.
the right names with the
right foods for grocery
shopping and cooking. A
