By 1854, William Smith and his brother were in "full operation" of their tannery. Said to be as result of a fire, W. G. borrowed on mortgage in 1856 and 1858 from "Jno." Seegmiller, presumably Jacob's brother. That firm was "J. & J. Seegmiller." Smith's newspaper description of the tannery as "two doors north of. Mr. Seegmiller's residence" is not clear today. Seegmiller did not acquire his lot on St. Patrick, at Waterloo, until 1858, but he owned the northwest corner and may have had a house there. In 'September, 1905, after the death of his wife, W. G. Arthur Smith pur- chased in 1895, from Donald A: MacKay, the northwest half of Lot 567 on Arthur street, and built there the white frame house which stands there now. His daughter Florence, born T Dec. 28, 1897, bought Lot 565, adjoining, and resold, the southwest half, retaining the eastern half as clear . space . free of building.
