British Hotel in Goderich
and the Queen's Arms in
Galt every day except
Sunday . and getting
through in 18 hours!
By 1854, William Smith
and his brother were in
"full operation" of their
tannery. Said to be as
result of a fire, W. G.
borrowed on mortgage in
1856 and 1858 from "Jno."
Seegmiller, presumably
Jacob's brother. That
firm was "J. & J.
Seegmiller."
Smith's newspaper
description of the tannery
as "two doors north of.
Mr. Seegmiller's
residence" is not clear
today. Seegmiller did not
acquire his lot on St.
Patrick, at Waterloo,
until 1858, but he owned
the northwest corner and
may have had a house
there.
In 'September, 1905,
after the death of his
wife, W. G. Smith con-
veyed to two sons, Arthur
, and William Franklin,
the tannery property, and
after seven years they
soldit toJi.owelL
The eldest son, Wilmer,
born in ' Rochester,
arrived in .Goderich in
1850. He worked at .the
tannery for a timeand for
ashort time in Detroit
before ,purchasing the
business of George
Robertson,. art dealer, in .
the Crabb Block (bet-
ween East and Kingston).
Later he purchased the
store and residence on
East street, where traces
of the "Art Store" sign
are still visible on the
west wall of Anderson's
Book • Store. Wilmer
Smith' was survived by
one daughter, Essie,
(Mrs. King) and 'a son,
Reginald, in Toronto.•

William Franklin
Smith, joint owner with
Arthur of the ' tannery,
remained in the business
for about 25 years, and
was leader of the
Goderich band and an
orchestra. He 'married
Emma M. Watson,
daughter of E. R. Watson,
Goderich. She died in
1911, and Smith went to
Swift Current, Sask.,
where he died in 1918,.
leaving two. children,
Grace, Swift Curre t, and
Charles, ..of Portland,
Oregon. .
Arthur Smith pur-
chased in 1895, from
Donald A: MacKay, the
northwest half of Lot 567
on Arthur street, and
built there the white
frame house which
stands there now. His
daughter Florence, born

Dec. 28, 1897, bought Lot
565, adjoining, and resold,
the southwest half,
retaining the eastern half
as clear . space . free of
building.
Dr. Florence Smith, a
longtime. teacher at
Havergal. College,
Toronto, and a frequent
traveller in Britain :Ind

January, 1966, after a
sudden illness here. The
property belongs now to
Miss MarcelleDeFreitas,
also a 'teacher at
Havergal.
W. F. Smith for some
time owned the northeast
half of Lot 567 and the
house which is now the

Dorothy Reed.
The tannery property
was purchased in 1963
from the Robertson
estate by Roy
Breckenridge, who had
the building demolished
and erected in 1964.an
