No, they didn't lose but they did find themselves behind for the first time this year. Last year's champions, Local 1863 fought this year's favourites right down to the final end but the ,powerful Foresters were able to achieve an important 8-4 victory. Winning skip Cam Bogie curled a remarkable 100 percent as he made key shot after key shot. The first tour held two .weeks into the New Year saw 10 determined skiers at the Menesetung Park trail on a stormy Sunday afternoon to start the 1979. season. The trails in this area border the west limit of the Sky Harbour Airport and follow in a generally northerly pattern towards the forest on the Sunset Beach Road. Although CHHL race tigh tens The CHHL league standings were tightened somewhat this week after two major upsets in league play. Last Wednesday Sifto dumped the Oldtimers 7-4 but Sunday the Oldtimers rallied with a last minute goal to defeat Burger Bar 9-8 for their first win. In another upset, Holmesville handed Sunset only their second loss of the season with a 4- 3 win, Wednesday. Their is now a race for. third spot in the league standings, an important fight sine the top .three teams in the league will participate in an area tournament in March. On Wednesday Sifto played Burger Bar and Sunday `February 11, Burger Bar will play Holmesville and Sunset battles Sifto. the wind was blowing quite• vigorously, with drifting snow in the open areas, the trail for the most part is sheltered making skiing enjoyable. The route winds through cedar and birch, stands, with a crossing of the deep North Canyon by means of a wooden, foot bridge. - •Returning by the same route, the slopes that were ascended With effort now materialize as easy downhill glides. Completing the four mile trip, the group met at Canyon Lodge for wine and cheese, summarizing the afternoon's events.' • Two weeks 1^.ter, more favourable weather conditions -saw the arrival of forty en- thusiasts at the Boundary line area of the Saratoga Swampfor an afternoon of skiing. Starting at the Hindmarsh farm, the intended route was northerly along the east edge of the ..swamp toward the Huron County forest two miles away. - The trail in this area is relatively undeveloped and traverses through mixed hardwood and coniferous, stands. Huge stumps attest to man's intrusion into the swamp and defunct logging trail -s now serve as the skiers highway. The advance party startles a covey of •partridge that leaps into 'flight. Fresh deer tracks cross the trail at various intervals, and the billowy snow on the cedar branches above serves as a grandstand for curious chickadees and juncos. The forest gradually thins until the' trail leads onto a snowy plain and, across half buried fences the group heads up the slopes towards the roadway bordering the Individuals - Groups - Companies t Can Help You! Crossing fences that were crossed before becomes" easier with our second wind. The snow bridge across the meandering creek doesn't seem as shaky and the gusting wind has abated in intensity. Laurie Ginn . and Don Hullah were the Health Unit heroes in this contest while persistent Marg deBolt turned in a solid effort for the losing foursome. The much improved Health Unit has only one loss in their record and that was to the Foresters and have established themselves as one of the teams to beat in the final year end bonspiel_on March 31. __ Whenever the GDCI teachers meet the A.M. & G. Hospital No. 1 team the game is destined to be a close and exciting confrontation. Last Thursday was no ex- ception to this rule as the two teams fought it out with the GDCI Teachers claiming a 7-5 last end triumph. Skips Ron Klages and George Sutton, both emjoyed good nights in a game where there were very few easy shots. Donna Doidge and Craig Cass, were also on opposite sides and both were outstanding for their respective teams. While the Klages rink was going down to a tough defeat the A.M. & G. Hospital No. 2 team was exploding far a 14-2 defeat of the Victoria Teachers. Unlike the previous week when Ron Ritchie was able to lead his team in an heroic comeback there was no escaping the outcome of this match as the hospitalites took a quick 8-0 lead after only three ends and then curled' expertly to record their win. Joe Ducharme, Jennifer Matthews Judith Anne Murray and Elmer Taylor all 'had , near perfect nights that left teachers Marty Bond, Anne Bond' and Barb- Lade arbLade wondering about the value of this "lear- ning experience." Champion Sales Office skip, Bill Iriayward'pulled every trick in the book including switching rocks in the last end but Bill's subterfuge had no effect on their opponents the Mitchelmore Family as the Mitchelmore four- some won 7-3. Hugh Hanly and Don Mit- chelmore led the way for the winners with ex- cellent games while Gord Crabb and Hayward curled well in defeat. Victoria ;and Grey skip Bruce Erskine r-eturned from vacation to lead his unit to a big 10-5 win over the GDCI Vikings. The student teacher Vikings stayed close in the early ends but the experienced V & G team pulled ...away in the final ends with fine shooting by Erskine and Pete Crew. Sue Ritchie moved into the unfamiliar position of vice -skip and performed like a veteran toTead the Assessment Office to a 6-2 victory over the Elementary Teachers. Ritchie got excellent support from Anne Mclsaac while Don Budnark and Mary Lu Taylor made a number "of excellent shotsbut to no avail as the teachers just couldn't get untracked. The Goderich Legion came close to an un- fortunate forfeit situation as only two of their regular mernbers•.showed .. up to play but a turn of events saved them as Jim McCaul volunteered his services and opposing skip, Jirn Bolan offered no. objection to the non - Legion player. Bolan's sportsmanship didn't do him any good, however, once the game started as the Legion threesome defeated the Champion office team 11-1. GODERICH .. UMPIRES ASSOCIATION MEETING TUES.
