The Goderich tearp lost only two games in its 26 game "schedule and finished , first in league standings. They now.begin Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoffs with two other 'BB' teams in their • league. As first place finishers, Goderich receives a bye in the first round and will then meet the winner of a best -of - •three series between Hanover and Kincardine. Port Elgin and Listowel meet in the other 'BB' semi-final. Against Listowel, Dan Maillet had four goals and an assist. Mike Wedlock had two goals and an assist and Mike Hodges had two goals. Larry Madge had one goal. and three assists. Rob Trebish had a goal and an assist and Larry Gaynor had one goal. Larry Boyce had three assists while Mark Rowe, Ken Reid and Steve Walters had two assists each. Todd Mind, . Dave Johnston and Steve Horn scored the Listowel goals. The score was tied 1-1 after the first period but Goderich outscored Listowel`? -2 in the second and 3-0 in the third period. Mike Hodges scored three goals and had one assist against Mount Forest Saturday, Steve Walters had two goals and Dan Maillet had two goals and three assists. Jim Costello had a goal and an assist while Mike Wedlock and Rob Trebish scored single goals. Larry Madge and Don Elliott had assists. Allen Morrison and John Reeves scored the Mount Forest goals. The Green and Parent Midgets journeyed to Kitchener on Sunday for an exhibition garne with the 'AA' Kitchener Kondors and came home with an impressive 5-1 win. Pat Pollifo scored for Kitchener in the first period to give the Kon- ' dors a 1-0 lead but from there' on it was all Goderich as the Green and.Paren-t crew. notched three second period and two third period goals to win going away. Except for some fine goaltending by the Kondors' Jeff Kienapple the score may have been higher. At the other end of the rink, both 'Goderich goalies, Steve Gallow and Brian Shewfelt played well. Danny Maillet scored four of the Goderich goals, all assisted by Larry Madge. Larry P Boyce scored the other Clement, Rob Trebish, Goderich goal. John Steve Walters and Rob McDonald each had rz single assists. Stars out of Silver Stick BY DAVE SYKES The Goderich Signal - Star juveniles were quickly eliminated from the Silver Stick torunament in Mooretown last Wed- nesday losing their first game. The Stars dropped the first game to a big, tough Aylmer squad, 8-1 but then took revenge on Delaware in league play here Sunday blasting the visitors 9-2. T -he Stars had good success akainst area competition in the Silver Stick last year but last week they were little match for Aylmer in the 8-1 loss. SPORTS P, The game was close for two periods as Aylmer neid a 1-0 lead after Chu first period of play and Goderich quickly tied the game with a goal by Hugh ' Haply 11,seconds into the second period. Aylmer then took the play to the Stars and scored three goals in the second period and added four in the final period to record the 8-1 win. Aylmer scored their final two goals on powerplays in the final minute of the.. game. The Stars took their frusteatio s out on Delaware Sunday scoring five goals in the final period en rout to a 9-2 victory. The teams were tied 1-1 after one period of play but the Stars scored three unanswered goals in the serond period to hold'a 4-1 lead and then outscored Delaware 5-1 in the final period. Hanly led the Goderich offence with a four -point effort on three -goals, and an assist. Linerhate Roger Lewis chipped in with two goals and two assists. Rick Rawson, Ian Chisholm, Larry Daer and Dale D.uncan - each scored a goal for Goderich. Rawson also added two assists. This Sunday the Stars will either play the final game of the season against Dorchester or begin OMHA playoffs against Strathroy. In either case game time will be 3 p.m. at the' Goderich Community Centre. Petrie paces Merchants to two victories BY DAVE SYKES The Goderich Mer- chants won two league games last week to move into sole possession of second place in the South . Huron ,Hockey League Intermediate C stan- dings. Sunday the Merchants scored four third period goals to down Thedford 7- 3 and Monday they scored three third period goals to defeat Centralia 7-4. The victories boost the Merchants season record to 17 Wins, four losses 'and two ties. They have one league game remaining. Zurich leads the league with 19 victories and a tie° in 21 games. The Merchants got a five -point effort from Phil Petrie on three goals and two assists in their 7-3 win over T.hedford, Sunday. Petrie again sparked a third period rally Monday as the Merchants scored three goals in the final period to break a 4-4 tie and defeat Centralia College 7-4. -Petrie scored three goals, two in the . final period, and added an assist on a goal by ]inemate Ohil Paquette. Ron Whetstone added two goals to the Goderich total and Paul Corriveau' scored the other. Goderich led 2-1 after one period,T4-3 after two but then outscored Centralia 3-1 in the final period. Besides holding down second - place in the standings the Merchants are also competitive for individual records. Their goaltending duo of Doug Fisher and Doug Sp-itzig trail in the goals agsainst department by a slim margin over the leaders. Petrie has now moved into third spot in the scoring race and team- mates Paquette, McDonald and Len Kolk- man are also listed in the top 10 scorers. The league will begin playoffs either February 19 or 26 and each series will be a best -of -five affair. If Goderich holds on to second place they will likely pi:ay Grand Bend in the first round and enjoy the home advantage. However there is a chance that Parkhill can catch Goderich and take over second place. The Merchants play their final game of the regualr schedule this Sunday against league - leading Zurich in the , Zurich arena. Game time is 2 p.m. Bantams lose two BY DAVE SYKES The injury plagued Goderich Lakeport Steel Bantams hadtheir recent win streak come.to an end as they dropped two league games last week. Last Thursday Listowel hammered Goderich 8-3 in Listowel and then Durham took advantage of a Goderich collapse Saturday in winning 7-5 in Goderich. ,, Lately the bantams have fallen behind early in their games but managed last period rallies to salvage ties or win. Thir luck ran out last week as Listowel scored three goals in the first and third periods and added two in the second for a convincing 8-3 win. Listowel 'spotted" Goderich the first goal of the game but led 3-1 after the first period of play. Thye increased their lead to 5-1 after two periods and then outscored . Goderich 3-2 in the final period. Woodstock wins tournament BY TD The sixth annual Viking Invitational senior boys basketball tournament was held at GDCI Saturday. The Woodstock Huron Park Huskies emerged as the tour- nament champions, winning 61-49 over London Central Golden Ghosts in the final. Ron Sanderson, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, led the Huskies with 19 points. The Huskies reached the finals by defeating Stratford Northwestern 65-56 in the semi-final. In first round action, Huron Park got by Kitchener St. Jeromes, 67-52. London Central defeated Sarnia Collegiatle 53-29 in their first rotund game and reached the final with a 67-46 win over ttre host GDCI Vikings in semi- final action. ' The Viking 's Jon Barz, who was p,bked as a 'tournament All-Star, had 14 points against Central. Dave MacKenzie added 13. Joining Barz on the All- Star team were San- derson, Bart Porter of London Central-, Peter i-Tawke of London Ranting and Al Otto of Stratford Northwestern. The Vikings won 'their opening round game, 49- 35, over Georgetown. The Georgetown team is coached by Morley Leeking, a former student of GDCI. . The Vikings, who are 5- 1 in Huron -Perth Con- ference play, returned to league action , Tuesday 'with a game in Mitchell. Jim Young, Dave Gallow and Dave McDonald scored the Goderich goals. Durham turned the tables on Goderich, Saturday as they over -- came a 4-1 Goderich lead after the first period and defeated the Steelers, 7-5. Goderich opened up a 4- I first period Lead on goals by Darrell Graham, David McDonald and two by Brad Armstrong. But Durham scored three goals in the second period and outscored Goderich 3-1 in the final period to record the win. The game was the final one of the season for both teams. McDonald scored the final Goderich goal of the game in the last minute of play. . The bantams now enter playoffs to determine the area's representative in the OMHA playoffs. Goderich will meet Port Elgin in the first game of a best -of -three series Wednesday in Port Elgin. The second game will be played in the Goderich Community Centre Thursday at 8;30 p.m. Beacom bucket beats Owen Sound 58-57 A basket by Greg Beacom at the final buzzer gave Goderich Garb and Gear Gee Gees an exciting come -from -behind 58-57 victory in Owen Sound, Friday. The Gee Gees were down by three points with 19 seconds remaining in the game when Jim Watt converted two free throws to bring his team within a point. Seconds later the locals gained possession of the ball on an Owen Sound turnover, setting up Beacom for his timely toss. Warren Watt again paced the Gee Gees in scoring with 14 points, followed by Dave Ross, Greg Beacom, and Jim Watt with '10 points each. Jeff Baechler scored six points and Bill Cauley added four. Brian MacKenzie and Al Sygrove each contributed a basket. The win was a big one for the Gee Gees as they increased their hold on first place in the Lakeshore Intermediate Basketball League to four points over second place Owen Sound. The Gee Gees next action is on Friday, February 9 against Walkerton. Game time is 8:00 p.m. in the GDCI gym. ( photo by Dave Sykes ) Sailors beat Wingham BY DAVE SYKES The ' Goderich Sailors scored six goals in the final 'two periods as they hammered the Wingham' Royals 10-2 in OHA Intermediate C action in Howick, January 31, The game was a makeup •game and the win kept the Sailors in the fight for the division lead with one game remaining in the schedule, The Sailors assumed control of the game late. in the first period as they broke a 2-2 tie scoring two goals in 20 seconds to hold a 4-2 lead after the first period. Their late period rally took the sting out of the Wingham attack as Goderich scored four straight goals in the second period and added .two in the final period in the 10-2 rout. Ken Meriam, Dan Colquhoun ° and Dan Duncan led the Sailors offensively with two goals apiece and Meriam and Duncan also added two assists. Wayne Rau, Scott Park,kon Sowerby and Rick Fremlin scored single goals for Goderich. Fremlin and Sowerby also contributed four assists each for a five - point night. Bill Kerr and Gary Lisle were the Wingham goal scorers. • The Sailors are idle until Friday, February 16 w -hen they will host •the Lucknow' Lancers in -an 8.30 p.m. contest at the Goderich Community Centre. It is the last game of the season for 'the Sailors. Denomme leads in peewee standings . The Goderich-Clinton pee wee house league is. continuing its schedule with several games to report. Monday, Denomme Flowers defeated McGee Firebirds in a lop -sided 9- 2 score. Brian Hanna led the Denomme offence with five goals, Bob Barraclough popped in two with singles by Peter Conlon and Ken Huff. Both McGee goals were tallied by Chris Starkey, Goderich Sproule Shoes defeated Clinton B's in a close, hard played game last Friday with nine penalties handed out and an unusual "illegal shot" penalty called against Clinton in the third period. Brent Williamson led the Goderich squad .with two goals with singles by Wayne Hertog, Tim . Riehl and Mike Collins. Clinton scorers were Bradley Holmes, Shayne Carter and John Wooden. The Clinton team is "really working hard to catch up after a late start due 4o ice conditions at the ,Clinton arena.., wa-tch out Goderich. Saturday at 7 a.m. two Goderich teams, Denomme Flowers and McGee Firebirds hustled to a 1-1 tie, Both goalies were busy with a few post hugging saves and good glove catches. Peter Conlon scored for Denommes and David Alrnassie tallied the single for McGees. Many of the parents would be surprised how wide awake these players are at 7 a.m. once they get those skates on and hit the ice...Come and enjoy these games, the kids need your support and interest.
