White
Cane
Week
"White Cane Week
began in ,i'946 at the
suggestion/ of a small
group of lAnd people who
discovered 'through
personal experience that
not inany sighted people
understood the meaning
of /the white cane," said
G: J. Collrin, • National
President, The Canadian
Council of the Blind.
"As the week gained in
strength and recognition,
the aims were broadened
to draw visually impaired
and sighted Canadians
closer together and to
reflect the growing status
of visually impaired
Canadians."
Each year a .different
slogan has been used to
help emphasize the ob-
jectives of the week. This
year the slogan is "Sight
Saved Can Be Shared"
during White Cane Week
from February 4 to 10.
Explained Collrin, "It
effectively illustrates the
particular theme for this
year. The accent is on
safeguarding your vision.
But it is also hoped that
the public will more
actively share their sight.
Over the years, White
Cane Week activities
have gradually made
many aware that a blind
person will be glad of a
friendly voice or the offer
of a guiding .arm as he
goes down the street."
Yet, more importantly,
he noted, people are
volunteering their time to
assist visually impaired
people in various ways.
Collrin said, "White
Cane Week has made a
constructive contribution
to the development of
understanding between
visually impaired and
sighted Canadians. It is
now opening the door to a
new program of in-
tegration into community
life."
On the prevention of
blindness side, the
education . week has
helped sighted in-
dividuals to understand
the importance of
common sense eye care.
He Concluded that the
week provides a window
to see through the myths
and fmrs of past ages and
into • 'progressive
programs in -develop-
ment, research and
rehabilitation.

this was suggested as an

that with the knowledge
and inspiration gained
from this conference and
with the strong record of
cooperation that we have
experienced in our
community of Huron
County in the past, we
will be able to reach our
1979 objective of
$45,000.00. '
"Defeating cancer is a
community responsibility
and every citizen ,can
share in the fight against
this disease by sup-
porting cancer resear-
ch."
Speaking to the
volunteers at the
meeting, Division
Campaign Chairman,
John Ross of Toronto,
reported that the 1979
objective is $1.2 million
more than the objective,
for last year. However,
he is certain that the goal
will be reached by the

decicated" campaign
team volunteers.
