Steelers win one

Despite playing three
league games in four
days the Goderich
Lakeport Steel Bantams
did nut lose a game in
WOAA league play last
week.
Goderich and Listowel
played to a 5-5" tie both
Thursday and Saturday
a home and home
series and on Sunday the
Steelers defeated Kin-
cardine 7-4.
Listowel and Goderich
played two rousing
games in their series with
each team staging third
peniod rallies to gain the
tie. '
Listowel pulled off the
heroics in the first game
scoring two. third period
goals for the tie. Goderich
returned the favor at
home Saturday with a
three goal third period
rally to salvage the tie.
The game in Listowel
Thursday was a seesaw
battle with the lead
changing hands several
times. Listowel scored
two goals in the first two
minutes of the game but
Goderich tied the score
before the end' of the
period of goals by Dennis
Kerr and Jim Young.
Listowel took the lead
in the second period but
Goderich got the offence
in gear and scored three
straight goals before the
end of the period to hold a
5-3 lead after two periods.
David Gallow and Darrell
Graham with two goals
scored for Goderich.
Listowel however, got
two third period goals
from Terry McCutcheon
to tie the game,
Goderich got their
revenge Saturday scoring
three third period goals to
steal a tie in a game
Listowel had well in
hand.
Listowel led 4-1 after
the first period of play
and each team added a
goal in the secohd period
to make the score 5-2 fir
Listowel.
But . Goderich
dominated the third
period and goals by Tom
Smith, Brad Armstrong
and Darrell Graham
moved the Steelers into a
tie.
Graham and Arm-
strong led the Steelers
offence with two gals
apiece while Pete Zister
had three goals for
Listowel.
The Steelers capped the
three games with a 7-4
win over Kincardine
Sunday on the strength of
a three -goal effort in the
final period.
Kincardine scored two
goals in the first two

minutes of play but the
Steelers fought back With
two first period goals by
Armstrong to tie the
game after one period.
Kincardine took the lead
for the second time with a
goal early in the second
period but the Steelers
dominated the second
half of the game and
putieu away WILfl to
second period goals and
three in the final
period. Trailing 3-2 in
the • second period the
Steelers got goals from
Tom Smith and Jim
Young to pull into the
lead 4-3 and Graham
capped the comeback
effort with three goals in
the final period.
Kincardine scored one
goal in the final period to
complete the scoring.
The Steelers play a
return match in Listowel
this Thursday , and
Saturday they will host
Duicharif in' a 6.30 p.m.
contest at the Goderich
Community Centre. '
Signal -Stars drop 5-2
decision to Lucan juveniles

The Goderich Signal -
Star juveniles gave up
three goals in the first
period and were never
able to get back in the
game as they dropped a 6-
3 decision to Lucan in
Shamrock League play,
Sunday.
Lucan burned the Stars
early in the game scoring
three times in the opening
seven minutes and the
Stars were -forced to play
catch-up hockey the rest
of ,the way. Lucan added
two goals in the second
period and scored the
only goal of the final
period in the 'home ice
win

After trailing 3,0 early
in the game the Stars got
back in contention with
Dale Duncan scoring on
an unassisted effort at
9.59 of the first period to
pull Goderich within two
goals of Lucan.
But Lucan put a
damper on the Goderich
comeback as they scored
early in the second period
and...then increased their
lead to 5-1 with a power
play goal midway
through the second
period.
The Stars managed to
get within three goals of
Lucan late in the period
as Roger Lewis scored on
a pass from line -mate
Hugh Hanly.
Goderich got within
striking distance early in
the final period with
Larry Daer converting a
'three-way passing play
from Lewis and Duncan
on a power play. Lucan
regained their three -goal
advantage three minutes
later and won the game 6-

The game was a rough
affair with the referees
calling 26 minor
penalties, 12 against
Goderich, and one
miscondsact against
Lucan.
The Stars return to
league play with a game
against Delaware next
Sunday at the Goderich
Community Centre.
Game time is 3 p.m.

Midget's roll twowins
The GOderich- Green
and Parent Midgets
added two victories to
their total in WOAA
hockey action last week,
bringing their regular
season record to 17 wins
and two losses.
Last Wednesday in
Mount Forest,. the Green
and . Parent team
defeated Mount Forest 6-
2 and Sunday in Hanover,
they blasted the Hanover
Midgets, 16-3.
Rob Trebish had a big
night in Mount Forest,
scoring four goals for
Goderich. Larry Gaynor
and Rob McDonald
notched the other
Goderich goals. Ken
Reid, Mike Hodges and
Dan Maillet each had
three assists while Mark
Rowe, McDonald and
Larry Boyce had one
assist.
Paul Donald and Allen
Morrison scored for
Mount Forest.
Team Captain Larry
Madge, who missed the
Mount Forest, game
because of illness,
returned to_ the lineup
with a vengeance Sun-
day, scoring five goals to
lead the rout over
Hanover. His linemates
Dan Maillet and Rob
Trebish each .scored
twice: Maillet had five
assists and Trebish four
while Madge had one.
Sailors edge Wellesley 2-1 lose 7-4

The Goderich Sailors
split a pair of weekend
games in OHA Inter-
mediate.0 action.
The Sailors broke a 1-1
tie with a goal in the third
period as they edged
Wellesley 2-1 in Goderich,
Friday and Saturday they
dropped a 7-4 decision to
Harriston in Harriston.
In the game against
Wellesley, Friday, the
close score was not in-
dicative of the play. The
Sailors held a wide
margin in play but were
unable to beat Weelesley
'gbaltender, Don
Green,who was peppered
with shots throughout the
game. They finally beat
him for the winning goal
in the final period and
hung on for the win.
The Sailors opened the
scoring in the second
period as Don Colquhoun
converted a pass from
Ron Sowerby and
Graham Hamilton.
Wellesley tied the. score
one minute later as Bruce
Yantzi beat Sailors
golatender Juergin
Hellman oifan unassisted
effort for their only goal.
Goderich won the game
on a third period goal by
Ken Meriam from Grant
Shelton and Hamilton at
13.14.
Third period spurt
lifts Oldtimers to win
The Goderich Old-
timers scored six goals in
the third period to defeat
Hanover 9-6 in exhibition
play at, .the Goderich
Community Centre,
Sunday.
The teams were tied 3-3
after two periods of play
but abandoned any
semblance of defensive
hockey in the third period
as nine goals' were

.Gabby Gaynor fed the
Godwich offence with a
two -goal performance.

• The Sailors modest win
streak was halted Sunday
, however as Harriston
scored two third period
goals to dump Goderich 7-
4.
Harriston led 2-0 after
the first period play, 5-3
after two periods and
then outscored Goderich
2-1 in the final period.
Goderich trailed 4-0 at
one point early in the
second period but rallied
for three straight goals to
trail by a single goal.
Scott Parks and Ritk
Fremlin with two goals
got Goderich back in the
game.
Harriston put a damper
on Goderich's momen-
tum with a goal late in the
second period and held a
two -goal advantage
heading into the final
period. Harriston added
two more goals in the
final period and Graham
Hamilton scored the final
Goderich .goal in the' last
minute of play.
Doug Boyd led the
Harriston attack , with
three pals and an assist.
The Sailors return to
action Friday nightwith

• an 8.30 p.m. game at the
Goderich and District
Community Centre.
Gee Geesbattle
for top spot
The Goderich Garb and Gear Gee Gees
remained atop the Lakeshore Intermediate
Basketball League with a 94-58 win in Kin-
cardine last Friday. The victory boosted the
local's record to nine wins and three losses.
Play in the first half of Friday's game proved
to be a tough defensive battle with Goderich
holding a slim 35-28 lead. The Gee Gees,
however, completely dominated the second
half, using a full court press that rattled the
Kincardine squad.
Warren Watt led Goderich in scoring with 23'
points, followed by Greg Beacom, with 20. Al
Sygrove added 19 tallies and Dave Ross helped
out with 10 points. Jeff Baechler and Jim Watt
scored 9 points each and Mike Wildgen rounded
out the scoring with a basket.
Next league action puts the Double G's
against the powerful Owen Sound entry ort
Friday, February 2. First place is at stake
when the teams take.to the -floor in Owen Sound.
The -Goderieh -team
went with only two lines
due to injuries and
Suspensions. The .line of
Jim Costello, Mike
Hodges and Larry
Gaynor collected six
goals, with Costello
getting a hat -trick,
.Hodges notching two and
Gaynor one. Gaynor had
four assists, Hodges three
and Costello two. •

other Goderich goal and
had two assists:
Steve Walters had, four
assists, Mark Rowe had
two and Ken Reid and
Mike Wedlock had one
assist each.
Coach Bill, Fritzley's
squad has a busy
schedule going this week.
Last night (Wednesday)
the Green and Parent
team played Hanover
hare a return
engagement. Tonight
they play in Listowel,
Saturday they play at
home against Mount

Sunday they travel to
Kitchener to play the
Kitchener `A.A" team \in
an exhibition game.
Bogie rink wins
in Owen Sound
A Goderich ,. rink
skipped by Cam Bogie
has advanced to inter -
divisional play in Mixed
curling play.
The rink, consisting of
Bogie; vice, Faye Ribey;
second, Dennis Lebrun
and lead, Nancy
MacKinnon, won the
Division 13B playoffs last
week and then tbok top
honors in the Division 13
playoffs with two vic-
tories over Owen Sound.
The Goderich rink
played well in the division
final defeating the Owen
Sound rink by convincing
scores of 11-2 and 6-3.
The rink now advances
to inter -divisional play in
Aylmer,February 4
against the winner of
,Divisions 14,15 and16.
The two winners from
the Aylmer competition
will advance to the
provincial finals to be
held in London.
