Editors came and went at the newspaper--W.H. Robertson,Alfred Wilkes, George Ellis --and Mr. Henry remained, retiring at the age of 66 when Bob Shrier was publisher. "I did everything on the paper/' he'reealls while listing the various jObs on his fingers, helping run the press, setting lead type, taking and developing pictures, running the lino -type machine for the ads and laying out pages. He remembers the old Signal press which was run by a gasoline engine. Once it caught fire, he says, and had to be put out with wet rags. He also re_me.mbers when a press - with a new water driven motor was introduced. It was a lot quieter after that, he says. MANY HOBBIES Although Mr. Henry was very busy at the newspaper, he did find -time for other things. In the July 5, 1945 edition of the Signal -Star, the editor wrote :"Bob Henry, printer on the Signal -Star staff, is a man o' parts. Besides being an expert coronet player, he finds time for photography, stamp collecting, fishing, etc., and another of his hobbies is gardening. Just now he has in his garden on Cambria Road a delphinium which by actual measurement is . seven feet,- one inch in . height. If anybody around here has anything to beat this we should like to hear about it." Mr. Henry's whole family was musically inclined. In fact, his brother Charles, was such an excellent violin player that he was of- fered a job with the Detroit Symphony which he turned --down because - he didn't want to leave Kincardine. This same brother first introduced Mr. Henry to the coronet or trumpet, as it is known today. Mr. Henry bought his first 'trumpet for $136, He played with Hal Blackstone's orchestra and with a band at the rink which used to be located on West Street across from the old A&P store. He earned 25 cents an hour for two hours playing at the rink and later got a raise to 75 cents a night, Of course, in those days, you could buy three big chocolate bars for a dime, he says.. One time when the band played for a dance sponsored by the Racing Association, each of the members was paid $1 for three hours --that wa's good pay in those days. Besides, playing in the band, Mr. Henry played the last post at various memorial services around the county for about 22 years. He himself served as a corporal in the army during the second World War. Mr. Henry took some high school classes in Goderich while he was working but he got so busy, he can't remember how far he got. He would just take classes here and. there on different sub- jects. MAKES MOVIE Always open to lear- ning eXperiences, he worked at other things besides his job. For example, he helped a printer by the name of Benjamin Townsend who 's had a printing shop near the library, to print the town's voters' lists and other such things. Another time, Mr. Henry gave up his two weeks vacation from the newspaper to help librarian. Glen Eckmier and his wife, make a sound movie about the library and different people for the county. It is entitled, "The Books Drive On". The Huron County Library has ,the master copy and the National Film Board of Canada Also has a copy 'l'wrn to page 344 • } 4iscoutLT u SAVE ENERGY ..
