Jottings
by Jack Riddell,
MPP
The Minister of
Revenue, the Honourable
Lorne Maeck announced
GAINS level increases.
In January, single
pensioners who receive
the 'federal Old Age
Security pension and
Guaranteed Income
Supplement (GIS) will
receive an additional $20
and married couples, if
each spouse qualifies for
GIS, will each receive $10
in their federal cheques.
In response to these in-
creases in the federal
payments, Ontario has
raised the monthly
GAINS income levels to
$343 ($4,120 annually) for
siingle recipients and $666
($8,000 annually) for
qualified married
couple.
Please note that this is
the first timLe, that the
married rate cannot be
calculated as double the
guarantee for a single
pensioner. This is a result
of the difference in the
increases by GIS by the•
federal government: -
The following
calculations indicate the
maximum GAINS
payments to single and
qualified married pen-
sioners: .
Old Age Security,
single, $167.21 - married,
$167.21; Guaranteed
Income .Supple'ment,
single, $137.28 - married
$114.15; Ontario.. GAINS,
$38.88 - married $52.01,
making totals of - single,
$343.37 and married
`$333.37.
Pensioners who do not
qualify for the federal Old
Age Security pension
because of the residency
requirements, but do
qualify for .., --GAINS
payments, will .receive
the full amount of the $10
and $20 increase directly.
Payments for single
pensioners will increase
to- $343.37 and to $333.37
for .. qualified married
couples.
If 'you have any
questions about the new
rates or if you would like
to receive additional
copies of these tables,

Russian
flu is on
the way!
Beware— Russian flu
may be headed this way!
Dr. Brian Lynch, medical
officer of-. health' for
Huron County says that a
few cases of Russian flu
have been identified in
London and it may be
creeping this way.
The -Russian flu was
first spotted in the United
States. and now, that the
flu season is upon us, it
won't take long to move
about Canada.
Russian flu is no more
severe than the kinds we
are used to, but it does
drag on for about two
, weeks. "It's not
devastating," Dr. Lynch
says. a,
There are also a few
'cases of measles and
chicken pox and mumps
in the area, but that's
fairly common for this'
time of year.
