BY JOANNE BUCHANAN Having just completed a feature on ALPHA Huron for last week's paper, I was interested to receive information in the mail this week about a unique, travel program that ALPHA members might be intex sted in. HANDI-TOURS will arrange special tours for groups, clubs and organizations on request. It welcomes families and friends to join in the fun and also welcomes the opportunity to speak on travel at your next club or organization meeting. For 1979, HANDd- TOURS is planning trips to Hawaii, Florida, Britain, Scandinavia, Greece and Israel. The January session of Huron County Council is scheduled . for Friday, January 26 at 10 a.m. in the council chambers, Shopping Centre, Suite No. 153, Toronto M6A 2T9 or phone (416).789-7650. Elaine Townshend, past -president and treasurer of ALPHA Huron, told me in our interview that more physically disabled people are travelling these days than ever before. Communities with accessible facilities sure make a difference. + + + While wracking my brains this week trying to come up with an idea for a feature, I eagle across a Driver Education car with a student driver at the wheel. It brough back memories of the days when I was learning to drive. It'slard to believe that I've had my licence for seven years now. At 16 it seemed as if I would never learn: - I decided to contact Mrs. Donna Tolchard of Goderich who was my driving instructor with the Driver's Education program when I was in high school. And yes, she is. still teaching people to drive. So I furthur decided to write a story on what it's like to be a driving instructor. It must be a nerve wracking job,I thought. But Mrs. Tolchard told me it's not so bad. And over the years she has made some .interesting observations about drivers. And get this guys. One of her ob- servations is. that women drivers aren't so bad! Hope you enjoy the story. By the way, if you have any feature ideas or any ideas for stories at all, please give me a .call at the Signal -Star office. I would be really grateful as it would save a lot of brain wracking each week. +++" Last Thursday, I went to the Huron County Land Registry office in town to do a short story on Jim Lindsay, the new land registrar. Well, the story turned out to be even shorter than I had an- ticipated. It seems that .Mr.. Lindsay has left after only one month on the job. di He was appointed on December 1 but after living and working here for a short time, he decided to return to Toronto. So, he left government services Court House, Goderich. • after 20 years and is now January clear the ra continues ....Don't miss the exceptional values now on at /he cloaes closez/ 36 North St. Shoppers Square Goderich IinIIR t OPEN WEEKDAYS & WEDNESDAYS TILL 5:30 title searching for a law firm in Toronto. It seems that Mr. Lindsay couldn't get used to life in a small town after living in Toronto for so long. Frank Hagan is the acting registrar here at present. +++ Don't forget to give generously when the March of Dimes cam- paign begins in this area on Monday, January 22. You will be helping the physically disabled. +++ The next Goderich Little Theatre play sounds like, it will be a good one. It is a comedy spanning 35 years of a marriage entitled The Four Poster. Written by Jan de Hartog and directed for GLT by Eleanor Robinson, the play features a cast of only two characters. The challenge will be in the ..timing, says Mrs. Robinson. It can be a difficult task for two characters to keep an audience interested for a whole play. The two characters are being portrayed by Warren Robinson and Virginia Lodge, no strangers to drama en- thusiasts in Goderich. They will require numerous make-up and costume changes in keeping with the play's time span of 35 years. The play starts on February 22 and runs to February 24. Watch this ne*spaper for further details at a later date. +++ Announcement was made in December of.the sale of a long established Blyth business, A. -Manning and Sons to Douwe Wilts and Gary Courtney who will operate under the name.: Alex Manning's Building . Supplies Limited. The new owners are former employees of the Manning firm. In ad- dition to experience in the supply business, for nearly five years they have operated a suc- cessful construction company. Wilts has settled north of Blyth in the Westfield area with his wife and twin daughters. He has worked for Kase Van- denHuevel Construction, Goderich. Courtney is unmarried and living in Blyth at present. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Courtney of Kingsbridge. The two men intend to keep on building with Courtney being in charge of the construction and Wilts in charge of the business end. The partners feel that there is a good future in supplying building materials and con- struction work for the area. The winner of $1,000 in this week's Goderich and District Community Grandstand lottery is Bill Austin of Seaforth. He held lucky ticket number 1407. By co -incidence, earlier on there was another winner from Seaforth with lucky ticket number 1408. +++ An interesting study concerning red-headed youngsters came to us in the mail last week.For- those readers out there who have redheaded children, you may be interested to know that Professor Brigid Peer of the University of Western Ontario Faculty of Nursing, has reached the conclusion ,°that young redheaded children may be more sickly than other youngsters. -Prof. Peer found thatbeing redheaded can ,actually be a hazard to -your--health--if you are, under five'years old and have bright red hair. Children with auburn or reddish -brown hair don't have the same extreme sensitivity, she found. After the age of five, the redheads lose this proneness to greater health problems. The redheaded child doesn't necessarily' ap- pear to be frail or sickly, she noted. Comparing the health histories of 30 redheaded children and . 30 children with a variety of hair hues,Prof. Peer, a paediatric nurse, discovered redheads tend to be sick more often and for longer periods. of time. She also found that these children seemed sicker when they were ill, had higher fevers, suf- fered more complications and their skin was slower to heal compared to the control group. The, study was con- ducted in Florida and was sparked by an incident Prof. Peer encountered while working in a hospital there: Neurosurgeons were puzzled by the slow recovery rate of a young patient who had un- dergone surgery. Because the child's head had been shaved, Prof. Peer at first wasn't aware the small patient was a redhead. Once she knew, she informed the doctors that a slower recovery rate was nor- mal for redheads. They were incredulous at the idea, which is considered common knowledge in England where Prof. Peer started her nursing career. As the daughter of a doctor and a membefof a family of redheads,.Prof. Peer grew up with the idea that redheads have to be treated with extra care. During her basic training in London, England, she via,Sn't surprised 'that a special bed for redheads was set up in the paediatrics wing. The gibed was right beside the nursing station where the redheaded patients could be carefully monitored. Prof. Peer's own son is a redhead, so she has first=ftaani >,. eacprience with the phenomenon. Discovering the reason for the difference is Prof. Peer's next objective. She hopes to use a larger sample of children and, COME TO CHARMAN'S WORK CLOTHING in LUCKNOW and take advantage of their IJAMUAIIY CLEAR4NcE Sale Prices in effect thru January 1.7 - 27 W 1 Thertnatets Underwear ‘nis stfated Coverall puck Jackets and Overall Also Included In Our. "In my original study I was trying to provb there is a difference between redheaded children and other children, that it's not just an old wives' tale," she comments. "Not all reolheads have that sensitivity but the majority -do. I don't know the reason for this --it could be biochemical or it could be genetic." In general, redheads are a mysterious group, she says. There doesn't seem to be a pattern for inheriting red hair. Redheaded parents can have dark haired children and non - complications and their infections may be more serious." +++ A nice note came to us this -week froln Grace Neville, Regent of the. However, it is im- portant for the mothers of young. redheads, especially those with bright red hair,to be aware of the possible difficulties which can arise and that, as a group, redheads tend to have more severe reactions to illness. "The main thing is prevention," she states.
