The Victoria. with the
he1prof Ramah and some
-iiaa nurses, she ran the
hospital, organized it,
adding a few more beds
along the way and
practised nursing. When
she visited the island
three years ago, she.• was
pleased to see that the
hospital was still active.
ON TO U.S.
AND CANADA
She and her husband
and son Gord returned on
leave to Michigan where
her husband's parents
lived in 1963. In no time
flat, she becahr a
registered nurse in
Michigan and worked
there for a year. Her son
Keith was born in the
United States.
After a visit to Canada,
she realizesi__.thaL_she
t.
would like to make heer
home in Ontario. So, She
moved her family here in
1964 and in no time flat
again, she got her Ontario
registration as a nurse.
"Can you see us at the
border," she laughs. "We
were a little UN. I was a
Scot, Gord was a West
Indian, Keith • was an
American and my
husband was a
,Canadian."
At this point in time,
Mrs. McDonald was a
member of the Royal
College ---of- Nurses, in
Britain, the Royal
College of Mid -wives ,and
the international Council
of Nurses. She was
registered as a nurse and
midwife in ,Trinidad and
was a registered nurse in
both Michigan and
'Ontario. She also had a
diploma in nursing
management and
received a Canadian
diploma in community -
and emergency __health
services .after ' taking a
course in Ottawa.
She went to work at the
Strathroy, hospital part-
time while living in
Watford: She didn't tell
the administration about
herself except that she
liked obstetric nursing
(she didn't want a lot of
responsibility at the'
time). It wasn't long,
however, until the ad-
ministrator there, who
was advertising for a new
director of nursing, asked
her if she would do it and
she agreed to do this until
they .could get someone
else. She worked full-time
from February of 1964 to
June of 1967.
COMES TO
GODERICH
She had come to
Goderich in May of 1967
on a "Get Acquainted
Week''. Alexandra
Marine and General
Hospital had just opened
a new wing and was
having several changes
in administration. The
senior nursing consultant
of O.:H.S.C. -asked five' i
she would consider going
to Goderich as the
Director of. Nursing. She
accepted and began work
at AM&G in' August of
1967. It was one of the
smallest hospitals she
had ever worked in and it
did not yet have its ac-
creditation (a seal of
quality). Tim Elliott
started as the new
Hospital . Administrator
at the safin times as she —
started as Director of
"With Tim Elliott' as
administrator and the
staff working as a team,
AM&G got its first ac-
creditationfor three
years in Ootober of 1970.1
-always felt it was a
privilege for me to be
associated with that
event," she says`.
"I enjoyed 'working
with Tim Elliott for the
eight years that we
worked together. I came
to ,know Goderich and the
people of Goderich during
that period and I also
came to know that I
wouldn't want to live
anywhere else," she
continues. )
She had /met Clifton
McDonald of Auburn in
February of 196$ and they
had been married in 1969.
They have' been' happily
married ever since. Son.
Gord is married and lives
in Goderich. He works at
Champion Road
Machinery Company. Son
